Billions of years ago... our planets primordial atmosphere was toxic to life as we know it, consisting of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other gases. However, by the Paleoproterozoic Era (2.51.6 billion years ago), a dramatic change occurred where oxygen began to be introduced to the atmosphere known as the Great Oxidation Event (GOE).
[S]cientists were not sure if this event which was the result of photosynthetic bacteria altering the atmosphere occurred rapidly or not. ... Based on newly-discovered geological evidence, the team concluded that the introduction of oxygen to our atmosphere was more like a fire hose than a trickle.

... Using these samples, Blättler and her team were able to learn things about the composition of the oceans and the atmosphere that existed on Earth around the time of the GOE. For starters, the team determined that they contained a surprisingly large amount of sulfate, which is the result of seawater reacting with oxygen.
...
This is the strongest ever evidence that the ancient seawater from which those minerals precipitated had high sulfate concentrations reaching at least 30 percent of present-day oceanic sulfate as our estimations indicate. This is much higher than previously thought and will require considerable rethinking of the magnitude of oxygenation of Earths 2-billion year old atmosphere-ocean system.

Not my fault.
Aliens.

I knew it was the Russians!
This is amazing. I went back in time 2.5322 years ago, planted a bunch of Kudzu, come back, and this article shows up.
I guess you CAN change the past. :)
Waiting for someone to post the Total Recall finale segment.
It was the great oxygen farting giant turtle, A’tuin
who created an oxygen rich world !
What I find amazing is photosynthesis only evolved one time. What if it had never evolved at all?
Genesis 1:1 is much easier to believe—maybe because it’s the truth from the Author of truth.
ping!
Big Bang ... caused by God.
Later.
Great Oxidation Event ... caused by God.
The cosmos would not have cared.
The phrase doesn't grab me. Can we call it the Great Oxidation Delivery? Life on Earth would not have occurred without GOD.
May not be your fault but it demonstrates the enormous power and authority of Trump.
“Frau Blättler”
Here’s my theory: The Earth was a big snowball. Then asteroids missed the moon and clobbered the Earth. The resulting heat melted the ice and disassociated some of the H2O into H and O. Over time the H seeped into space leaving a lot of O2. At least, that’s what my model is telling me.
Just like the old Total Recall movie?
“What I find amazing is photosynthesis only evolved one time.”
as best as i can tell, EVERYTHING evolved only one time. Seems unlikely that none of the branches of the “tree of life” ever evolved again given that the singular driving force of the doctrinaire theory of evolution is that we exist inside a temporary, picoscopic pocket of negative entropy ...
