Lawyers diGenova, Toensing cannot work on Trump's Russia legal team, Sekulow says
Fox News ^ | 3/25/2018 | Joseph Weber

President Trump’s new picks for his legal team in the Russia investigation cannot join because of “conflicts,” Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president, said Sunday.

“The president is disappointed that conflicts prevent Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing from joining the President's Special Counsel legal team,” Sekulow said in a statement.

Trump added the husband-wife team after John Dowd, a top member of the team, resigned last week.

Sekulow said the conflicts do not prevent diGenova and Toensing from assisting the president in other legal matters, but declined to reveal the nature of the conflicts.

The couple's firm has represented other clients in the special counsel's investigation, including former Trump campaign adviser Sam Clovis.

“The president looks forward to working with them,” he said.

On Sunday, diGenova and Toensing released a joint statement, saying, "We thank the president for his confidence in us, and we look forward to working with him on other matters." DiGenova, who provided the statement to The Associated Press, declined to answer additional questions about the nature of his and Toensing's representation of the president.

Trump boasted earlier Sunday that many lawyers -- with the prospect of “fame & fortune” -- want to represent him in the Russia collusion investigation, amid news reports that he cannot hire top-rate lawyers for the job.

“Many lawyers and top law firms want to represent me in the Russia case...don’t believe the Fake News narrative that it is hard to find a lawyer who wants to take this on,” Trump said over two tweets.

YES, MASSIVE partisan conflicts of interest for all the ‘rats on Mueller’s team, and never a peep about that.

What was he working with the Russians for anyway?

A lawyer can refuse a client because lawyers make the laws.

It is still discriminatory.

Jay Sekulow should have been AG hands down.

I’ve heard Jay speak of ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ and that we can’t possible deport ‘11 million’ illegal aliens...His method of draining the swamp is ‘personnel replacements’. Nothing confrontational or controversial as bringing the aholes to justice.

No thanks.

There was a time before Jay Sekulow proved his personal and overarching cowardice when I would have agreed with you.

Like Mark Levin, he proved he was not what he pretends to be.

That’s a good thought. I think Sekulow is very sharp.

There was no Trump Russian Collusion so how can there be a conflict in any way whatsoever? Wait, let me guess. Joseph diGenova once watched Sputnik fly through the sky when he was a kid.

How did they not know this before?

Well it could be that after given details of some of the issues involved in the defense they discovered something that they were previously unaware or an entanglement they didn't previously know about.

“They are ethically bound to serve the interest of their current client.”

What does ethics have to do with being a lawyer?

I've learned not to take too literal what Trump says or get upset with what he does. He always seems to come out on top. What appears at first blush is not always what is actually going on.

Trump never does anything without a strategy and a plan.

The apparent hiring and then having to back away from Toensing and diGenova was designed for Mueller's consumption, I think.

I think there is some sleight of hand going on here. Trump is up to something that is being kept under wraps until all the players are in position.

I am not trying to read the tea laves here. Just an educated guess, based on Trump's operating style and him being the master deal-maker and manipulator.

Otherwise, I'm just here for the view like every else is.

I heard Sekulow deflect a caller from the birth certificate story, saying there were other things more important to talk about.

You are correct, I think.

diGenova was brought into the public eye in the past week. Trump may use him in another vital role.

I have learned that Digenova’s well-known connection to the FBI informant on U1 may not be behind the soc-called conflict. It may be because of his (and wife’s) representation of Sam Clovis and perhaps other members of Trump’s team, which hasn’t attracted a lot of attention.

“Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president”.

Boy did I miss or forget that that’s where Jay is now. I think that’s great, and I now I see where the Trump team is getting good help coming up with good judicial candidates.

When I saw that one statement I quoted, I said Wow, great!!!
