Sarah Stephens was surprised by what she saw when she checked her security cameras to figure out what had caused a crash in her side yard.
I saw a girl hop over our fence, try to open our sliding glass door, said Stephens. She couldnt get in there, so she ran inside the doghouse and hid there.
Got our shotgun out. Got the baseball bat. If she somehow managed to come into our house, we were ready, said Stephens.
Stephens thought about letting her three dogs out in the yard, to chase the woman out of their house.
But since she didnt know if the woman was armed, she waited for police to bring their K9.
Stephens is relieved they were both caught, but cant stop thinking about what could have happened if she hadnt heard the noises and checked her cameras.

“Got our shotgun out. Got the baseball bat...””
Seems like something you could just throw a net over and haul away in the back of a pickup truck.
Put on a collar and bring out a leash...
Let me guess: Her name is ‘Lady’.
Or tramp
I would have paid money to see the video if they had done that...can you imagine three dogs finding out there was a strange human inhabiting THEIR doghouse?
If it had been three large dobermans, that would be one thing, but if it had been three small, ill-tempered, viscous ankle-biting dogs who could all fit into the doghouse with the intruder...:)
It's not a good idea. If/when the police show up and her dogs are running around barking at the strangers - both perp and officers - in their yard, have no doubt that the police would shoot those dogs in a heartbeat.
She never thought "If they have a doghouse, that must mean they have...
Got our shotgun out. Got the baseball bat. If she somehow managed to come into our house, we were ready...”
Love this. One of the main reasons why I have firearms - protect my family from injury or worse should some dumb bastard break in. Love how they handled this, love the fact that the family was NOT going to be victims, LOVE the fact that they could be confident that they were in control of the situation.
Owner is getting more lights and cameras. Sounds like this is not a one time event in that area. Might I suggest a few bouncing Bettys.
A bouncing Betty loaded with that dye that the banks would sell well.
I live in a fairly good neighborhood and a higher up person lives a few blocks away.
The higher up has had a ransacked vehicle and the S/O’s ride stolen. Lots of people and cameras around. Not sure if the perp was caught.
I’m going to up camera coverage myself.
The local neighborhood meeting last night had a crime report. The local fuzz offered an idea for low budget people. Game cameras. It was a reminder to get a couple anyway.
She was alerted by hearing a noise but not by her dogs? Time to get new dogs.
“”Stephens is relieved they were both caught””
Went from “her” to “BOTH”? How many were there?
It's not a good idea.
Can you say lawsuit?
If you need cameras, dogs, lights, bats, AND guns perhaps you are living in the wrong neighborhood.
Please, no flames because I mentioned guns, I can see the obvious need wherever you live but this situation sounds like you are living in a war zone.
My little guy will NEVER knowingly be put in any dangerous situation by me. Whenever we are approached by a large dog, for example, he is almost always behind me looking for ME to protect HIM.
His most important function in life is his ability to detect anything which he doesn't think belongs in his area. He has never bit anyone to my knowledge but he will snap at unwelcome advances from strangers. Once he is properly introduced to someone, he is your friend for life.
I would have been alerted the second he found out someone was jumping the fence. It is amazing what he can detect even when he is inside. In a discussion with another chihuahua owner last summer, he contended Chihuahuas were bred for the wealthy in Europe so that pickpockets could not steal their jewelry. It's my first small dog and he is an incredible first alert.
A lot of people make fun of Chihuahuas (probably because the name is funny to us) but I hear they are quite intelligent and fun to own!
Then they'd never be able to let their own dogs out in their yard.
