Scotts telomeres (endcaps of chromosomes that shorten as one ages) actually became significantly longer in space, NASA researchers wrote in a statement. The space agency added that Kelly had hundreds of space genes activated by the year-long flight which reportedly altered the astronauts immune system, DNA repair, bone formation networks, hypoxia, and hypercapnia.
While Scott Kellys height and 93 percent of his DNA returned to normal after returning to Earth, NASA confirmed that seven percent of his genes have remained changed and may stay that way. This is thought to be from the stresses of space travel, which can cause changes in a cells biological pathways and ejection of DNA and RNA, researchers added.

Not only that, as I recall, longer telomeres mean a longer lifespan. A little bit is lost when genes split to form new cells or something like that. So longer is better. Interesting. I wonder if the tradeoff from increased cancer risk evens it out.
Does this mean that he came back and joined the NRA?
So what we’re saying then is that they’re both mutants now?
Oh my goodness, don’t tell me there.......are TWO of these guys!!
One is plenty.
Time will tell.
Also, GPS clocks run faster than Earth-bound clocks, but they are at a higher altitude than the space station.
So the aliens really are shorter because of space travel./s
Their mom says, “Yeah... space. It was because of outer space that they have different DNA”.
LOL
bone density is overrated
Thats what all the Belters say. (The Expanse reference)
damn straight. Semper Fi.
yeah, that ain’t gonna happen.
Are we to start calling him Chelsea Kelly, now?
What the hell is it with these damned Swabbies?
“Also, GPS clocks run faster than Earth-bound clocks, but they are at a higher altitude than the space station.”
Both effects are relevant; you have to put pencil to paper to figure out which wins out. This mission inspired a buzz about the twin paradox a while back; there were some articles published where they worked out the math for us ;)
Time slows down due to boredom.
Everyone can relate to that.
Interesting study. I would be neat if another pair of twins could duplicate the experiments to broaden to data base. By the way, Scott Kelly and Mikhail Korniyenko fell 25 days shy of a full year in space. Musa Manarov and Vladimir Titov DID spend a full year in space. Valery Polyakov spent fourteen months aloft on a single spaceflight, the all time record for a single flight.
LOL Can see the headlines now
MAN’s twin overnight has a complete gender change to become a female.
Epigenetics, baby! So cool.
