Five years ago, when actor Michael Douglas candidly revealed that his throat cancer was linked to having oral sex, two things happened.
He made headlines that mortified his family. And he helped publicize the fact that a pervasive, sexually transmitted virus called HPV was unleashing an epidemic of oral cancer among men.
Since then, scientists have made headway in figuring out why HPV, the human papillomavirus, has this glaring gender bias. Men are four times more likely than women to be diagnosed with oral cancer, a hard-to-detect, hard-to-treat disease that has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States.
To be sure, changes in sexual norms over the last few generations have played a role in this alarming trend. But research increasingly shows the real problem is something men have practically no control over: their immune response.

I’ve never heard anyone imply that the marriage between Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones was a stage marriage but they’re not exactly unheard of in Hollywood circles, you know.
>>And partly because men voluntarily dont monitor their health as much as women, and dont see their health issues as being part of some mens issues.
Isn’t that the purpose of AWARENESS months??
Even November, which was supposed to be about prostate, testicular, etc cancers turned into “show off your epic beard month”. Wrong end!
I knew I picked a bad say to start using words
“Live by the sword.
Pork sword.
And the woman you're with now. You're munching on all of her previous partners.
Yuck!
They can if either husband or wife was sexually active before marriage. How many women remain virgin until married anymore, let alone men?
Guilty?
4 beers if the body is proportionate.
LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>Better yet, no oral sex. Screw the evil vaccine.<<
As it were.
Good to see I am not the only one working with words today.
“Do cancers that men get more really matter in our society?”
Men have a lot more prostate cancer than women.
“And the woman you’re with now. You’re munching on all of her previous partners. “
Gee, thanks for the reminders for us. :/
Another interesting factoid from my working life- gay men do develop anal HPV. We started getting anal paps on gay men, two decades ago. And it is as virulent in men as women. I remember being at a medical meeting and there was a speaker talking about anal HPV. He showed an article from the San Francisco Chronicle called Just Like Mom, Boys, Get Your Yearly Pap. I hadnt encountered any anal paps in my work yet, and I was shocked.
“Glad Im old and married.”
Yep, that will pretty much end it.
Seems like more forced Gardasil propaganda.
Michael Douglas was married to this one....has she been tested since he has been diagnosed? Otherwise, is CZJ in jeopardy, too?
HPV is causing something of an epidemic of head and neck cancers primarily in men due to oral sex, but it’s not just spread by oral sex. It can also cause cancer “down there” in men. The stats are skewed by rampantly promiscuous homosexuals, though. I’d be interested in seeing stats on heterosexual men only, and yes broken out by race because sexual behavior and susceptibility to disease does vary on a racial basis. Don’t hold your breath for those stats to be publicized, though, they’re “racist” because the numbers don’t look pretty for certain groups.
>>Michael Douglas was married to this one....has she been tested since he has been diagnosed? Otherwise, is CZJ in jeopardy, too?<<
dang!
I hope not!
Frankly I don’t know what CZJ(D?) thinks (or if she does) but she is one the hottest women of her generation — maybe the hottest.
