Five years ago, when actor Michael Douglas candidly revealed that his throat cancer was linked to having oral sex, two things happened.
He made headlines that mortified his family. And he helped publicize the fact that a pervasive, sexually transmitted virus called HPV was unleashing an epidemic of oral cancer among men.
Since then, scientists have made headway in figuring out why HPV, the human papillomavirus, has this glaring gender bias. Men are four times more likely than women to be diagnosed with oral cancer, a hard-to-detect, hard-to-treat disease that has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States.
To be sure, changes in sexual norms over the last few generations have played a role in this alarming trend. But research increasingly shows the real problem is something men have practically no control over: their immune response.

Thank you for your sensible remarks-some of the posters here seem to think that mutual oral sex is uncommon-or taboo for heterosexual couples.When MrT5 and I got serious and decided to get a room for the 1st time, we were both divorced and he had most definitely not been a choirboy since-so we presented each other with results of tests showing we were both STD free-it was just expected by both of us-no big deal...
Last year, my guy Nemesis handed me the same tests when he asked me to be his partner-I offered to be tested and do the same, but he said he’d been told I hadn’t even dated anyone since being widowed-I live in a gossipy rural area, but the presenting of proof of being STD free goes all the way back to when it was discovered that AIDS had passed from the homosexual community into the heterosexual one by promiscuity and prostitution...

Well, I had the PSA test about a year ago and Medicare covered it.
Researchers now think sperm and viruses can trade-off genes and gene-fragments. That's one of the ways viruses mutate so rapidly. Sperm interact with bacteria too, I think.
You want super-viruses? "Normalize" the charming custom of men putting sperm where it ain't supposed to be. Gay sex for the straight guy.
A woman's genital tract is an environment where that kind of permutation/combination of genetic fragments is minimized. It has the right kind of pH and mucous membranes and lymphocytes and so forth, It keeps the sperm in good shape for fertilization.
To get a bit teleological on you, I would say the penis and the vagina were made for each other --- on the cellular biology level.

You dont have to have sex with multiple partners. One will do it.
Some really ignorant comments on this thread. Fyi, oral sex on a woman who is infected with HPV will be passed onto the muncher. It lies dormant for decades and will then morph into oral cancer. Men are more susceptible than women for this to happen. Think about it guys. Think of every woman you were with over your lifetime. Any one of them could have left you with a little surprise.
