Five years ago, when actor Michael Douglas candidly revealed that his throat cancer was linked to having oral sex, two things happened.
He made headlines that mortified his family. And he helped publicize the fact that a pervasive, sexually transmitted virus called HPV was unleashing an epidemic of oral cancer among men.
Since then, scientists have made headway in figuring out why HPV, the human papillomavirus, has this glaring gender bias. Men are four times more likely than women to be diagnosed with oral cancer, a hard-to-detect, hard-to-treat disease that has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States.
To be sure, changes in sexual norms over the last few generations have played a role in this alarming trend. But research increasingly shows the real problem is something men have practically no control over: their immune response.

Do cancers that men get more really matter in our society?

Gay men yes.
Normnal men, no.
Who da thunk that someone's junk is not an appropriate thing to put in one's mouth? They're at relative opposite ends of the boddy for a reason, I supect.
Glad I’m old and married.
Yup. BTW, gays are not men. It’s insulting.
And this is why you should not only get your daughters vaccinated against HPV, but also your sons.
And should any anti-vaccination zealots feel compelled to respond, spare me...just leave YOUR children unprotected while we protect ours.
Oral cancer, a hard to detect, hard to treat disease has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States
Im sorry, but having been in cancer screening for 40 years, I find this ridiculous. Oral cancer is hard to find, but all they have to do is start treating oral cancer like they do cervical cancer, with a yearly exam. (Oh wait, are women still allowed to have a yearly exam, or is it every three years now?) There simply cannot be more oral cancer than cervical cancer, unless they are not adding the countless women with pre-cancerous lesions, that are caught with Pap smears and then treated before the lesion advances to malignancy.

The left has screwed enough with the language. I don’t want to play footsie with it here.
Note: I agree with your sentiment.

Wellllllll..... Oral Sex is “quite” common.
Men don’t get routine medical tests as frequently as women, right?
Heard it a thousand times growing up...
Dont *** that, you dont know where its been...
My kids have all the vaccinations...including HPV. They have never had any probs with any of it.
I had all of mine as a kid. Even smallpox when I was 5 in 1972. I think because my dad was military. I have a nice round, faint scar on my left arm.
Sex with multiple males gave women genital warts, which also gave them cervical cancer (once described as a prostitutes disease, now affects young 20s and even late teens).
Now, females with non-curable genital warts, give men who have oral sex with the infected women, oral and throat cancer!
What a world!
Having experience in the field of cancer detection, I do not advocate the HPV vaccine. It was tested on a cohort of women in France. These women were in their mid-20s. The recommended age group for this vaccine in this country is preteen. Go ahead with it, if you want, but there have been some deaths occur. And I am not anti-vaccine. I had our son vaccinated when he was a toddler, for all the viruses out there. I just have a feeling that the HPV vaccine was pushed too fast, so that the window between dr appointments could be lengthened. Women used to be afforded one Pap smear per year, by all the health insurance companies. Now women in their child bearing years are only afforded a Pap smear every three years. I really believe the Obama Admin decided to allow Merck to promote this vaccine (Gardasil) as a silver bullit if you will. And a gullible public bought into it. Look up Gardasil (the most common vaccine) and Cervarix (the less common vaccine) and peruse the lawsuits. Just an FYI.
Some really ignorant comments on this thread. Fyi, oral sex on a woman who is infected with HPV will be passed onto the muncher. It lies dormant for decades and will then morph into oral cancer. Men are more susceptible than women for this to happen. Think about it guys. Think of every woman you were with over your lifetime. Any one of them could have left you with a little surprise.
