On March 6, 1998, a little movie called “The Big Lebowski” opened in half-empty theaters across the country, and anyone expecting the Coen brothers to get serious for their follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Fargo” was in for a very chill surprise. A dopey but profound slacker noir about a guy — a conscientious objector to all human conflict — whose quest to avenge a soiled rug unravels into a wild goose chase involving all sorts of inherent vice, “The Big Lebowski” may not have been much of a hit at the box office, but it took on a life of its own after that.
Not because I'm a slacker. I'm not.
Not because I'm a stoner. I'm not.
Not because I'm a bowler. I'm not.
And not because I drink White Russians. I don't
But because in retirement I've grown my hair out and have a chin beard that makes me a dead ringer for Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. I love the movie.
I've had people randomly call out "The Dude" to me in a store every once in a while. In good fun.

Boxoffice flop that found a loyal audience maybe.

I know a Dude in Southern California who when the movie came out I called his best friend and told her she had to watch this movie.
She hated the movie but agreed her friend was The Dude.

First time I saw it was with a bunch of pilots in the wardroom of my first ship...I didn’t get it the first showing, but was hooked on subsequent showings

Another thing in that scene is the guy that was hiking the cliffs up above them ...he sees them and ducks back out of the way
In SoCal it’s because it took place here and we all knew people just like The Dude
