You know the DEMS always want to insist on minimum wage raises because they are for the working people? Yet the DEMS and Pubbies want to have these so called Free Trade agreements.
Well what the heck? Does no good to have a minimum wage, if the jobs all go to a place with lower labor costs.
So how else are we supposed to keep manufacturing jobs here- tariffs seem like an equalizer.
According to Levin, tariffs look good at first, but would ultimately destroy our steel production. Basically, while they would make our steel more competitively priced domestically, they would make it uncompetitive internationally and destroy our ability to export steel, thus opening the door for China to take a bigger share of the export business.
I do not understand economics enough to have an intelligent opinion on this.
But the main point, I think, is to get the issue of steel production, and Chinese vs. US steel, into public discourse. So in that regard it worked. I am thinking about it.
Remember, the $15 minimum wage is the break even point for the national unions like the AFL-CIO to service a union members account. If they were to unionize a company with lower wages ( in order to help them raise wages) they would be losing $$. Like any business, the business of unions at the national level is to make profits and use those $$ as power levers for national politics. The goal - to make us all equal! Sounds like national sshhh Socialism? You make the call.
Isn’t it true that initially, right after Founding, the government’s sole source of income WAS tariffs? Not 100% sure about that, but that factoid is rattling around in the BHG (Brain Housing Group).
