“U.S. News & World report ranked the best states in the US for quality of life.”
To understand the strange results we see in this report one only need look once again at the above.
But Texas--where everyone from California is moving--isn't far behind, at 46.
Californias population growth is continuing to slow and that we could see a no-growth situation in future decades.
High foreign immigration and a new baby boom generated a nearly 25 percent gain in Californias population between 1980 and 1990, but growth slowed markedly during the 1990s, principally due to a recession that sparked an exodus to other states.
Slowing immigration and lower birthrates continued to reduce growth in the new centurys first decade and in this one as well from 2 percent a year in the 1980s to about one-third that rate today.
Foreign immigration has dropped sharply, and we now lose more people to other states than we gain, with Texas the No. 1 destination for ex-Californians.
Most interestingly, the states birthrate has declined to 12.42 babies per 1,000 population, down more than a percentage point from 2010 and the lowest in California history.
Meanwhile, the aging of the baby boom generation the oldest boomers are now 70 means an increase in the states death rate to 6.71 per 1,000.
Births minus deaths, dubbed natural increase, still account for more than two-thirds of Californias population growth, but as the gap narrows, it slows growth.
Californias current growth rate, about 0.7 percent a year, is scarcely a third of the nations fastest-growing state, Utah, which posted a 2.03 percent gain between 2015 and 2016. Its also less than half of the rate in rival Texas.
There is mostly no climate here, mostly comfortable weather, and no annoying insects. People are casual and moderately friendly and mostly let you live your life your way. There is a short distance between greatly varying topographies as well as lifestyles. Beach, mountains, deserts, countryish, big city. It is fairly easy to get used to the pace. There isnt a type of person who does not fit in here (for real, there are even pockets of LA county where the 2nd amendment rules and where first responders and conservatives fit in.). There are great entertainment and sports and cultural events. There is every kind of activity for children.
Those are the positives. The negatives are that no one other than the wealthy can afford a typical middle class life. The schools suck and there is no hope for anything other than leftist politicians winning elections. There is ghastly traffic taking many hours out of your week. Homes are almost impossible to buy and what you get for your money is poor indeed compared to elsewhere. The local government puts illegals and homeless ahead of citizens and residents. In many places, you will be surrounded by people who are shockingly gullible and politically ignorant.
California’s a South American hellhole...
Violence, gangs, small percentage of uber rich ‘elites’ and lots of very very poor people. Not much middle-class... yep, it’s a hellhole.
Although the population of California is increasing, the absolute number of native born Americans residing there is decreasing.
In a nutshell, California is becoming a third world country.
LMAO. Especially this time of year.
You too, huh? Ocean County for me. Formerly of Hudson.
“If CA is so bad, why are so many people going there?”
What an pathetic “study”!
California gets ranked #44 in “natural environment”???
When it comes to natural beauty, variety, weather, things to do... it’s not even close. CA is #1.
Politics on the other hand...
Anyone who has been in ND between about November and April knows this is total BS.
Very interesting.
We were driving from Arkansas into Oklahoma the other day. The sign at the state line says: “Oklahoma! Discover the excellence!” My wife read the sign and said, “Good luck.” For the first few miles, until you get to the thriving metropolis of Roland, the road is new headed West but then it turns into a series of endless WHAM! bumps. You aren’t permitted to drive in the left lane where the better pavement is sometimes since some lame brain state legislator made that against the law too. I can’t imagine pulling a travel trailer across these roads.
Social Environment? What does that mean?
My son just 2 weeks ago drove a round trip from Houston to Pomona. He traveled I10 all the way. He said there were “hundreds of U-Huals” on the highway coming toward Texas. I don’t think many people are moving the other way. I wish they would go to North Dakota instead. We’ve got enough of them.
I love the fact they have Texas as almost last! Just leave us alone...
They aren't.
Such silly lists. How many people want to and live in ND compared to states with warmer weather and actual cities?
Who really cares how many of their neighbors vote?
North Dakota checking in. (Minot) Hail yesterday. Freezing rain today. Snow forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow. But at least it’s not -20.
NY ranks better than Texas? This evaluation just lost all credibility.
Locals say the good thing about the weather is that there are no homeless or gang bangers hanging out at night due to the weather.
