Remote Scottish islands declared rat-free after rodents lured to captivity using peanut butter and chocolate
A remote Scottish island has officially been declared rat-free after rodents were caught using peanut butter and chocolate.
In a four year programme to rid the Shiant Isles of its rodents, the RSPB placed mini rat motels across the area filled with cocoa and peanut butter flavoured wax blocks to catch them.
It is hoped by ridding the island of its non-native rats the seabird populations will be boosted by protecting their breeding sites
The Isles, a cluster of islands five miles east of the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, form one of the most important seabird breeding colonies in Europe, providing a home for around 100,000 pairs of nesting seabirds each year.
But it was feared that rats on the islands were feeding on eggs and chicks of the birds that breed there, including puffins, razorbills, and guillemots.
A monitoring programme last month found no evidence of rats - meaning none of the creatures have been recorded on the Isles for two years, meeting the internationally agreed criterion for rat-free status.

Crazy headline... “Lured to captivity”???? More like lured to their deaths. Geesh. Journalists can’t even write a story saying that rats were killed.
My mother used to catch mice with bacon, but I learned as an adult they are CRAZY about peanut butter.
The best way to lure a ‘rat is with free housing and food stamps.
No, in this case, the rats were probably caught, shipped to California, and then released there.
"No borders!", yuh know...
Regards,
I wish we were RAT-free. Drain the Swamp!!!
In fairness to the Rats, that would catch me out as well
Reeses peanut butter cups. Killer sweets!
No one, of course, bothered to ask what Takoma Park would do with the rats once trapped. Eventually, however, a sane person surfaced and posed the question. The response from a city official was timeless: "rats are wild animals and we should release them back into a wild environment, so we thought we might take them up to Frederick County [still rather rural at the time] and release them there."
This almost started CWII, but the crisis was averted. I almost regret this. Had Takoma Park pressed its release plan, Frederick County would have blown all the bridges, mined all the roads, and fortified the border. The northern suburban sprawl might have been stopped in its tracks right there.

....
I have been caught using peanut butter and chocolate on more than one occasion, but I am now clean and Reeses-free....
Except for 270. Gateway to the bedroom communities of Fredneck.
FUNNY! I almost spit my covfefe all over my screen!
How do you know? Maybe they were sent to Gitmo.
Who knew there was an internationally agreed upon criterion for such things?
Least the bridge from Leesburg to Poolesville hasn’t been built (yet)
Like to see at least 1/2 of the Fed agency moved to other parts of the country (like Detroit!). Would be cheaper than the cost of buying up all the property next to the beltway and 270, let alone the construction costs.
This may be a good way to get rid of Democrats. Only what do you do with them?
"The Shiants is a group of rocky islands in the Minch, lying four miles to the east of Lewis with a large seabird population including a colony of tens of thousands of puffins. It is owned by the islands only (part-time) inhabitant Adam Nicolson, who inherited these islands from his father, who had bought them in 1937 after answering a newspaper adUninhabited islands for sale. Outer Hebrides, 600 acres. . . . Puffins and seals. Apply.
And then imagine it being rodent free.
