Winter storm on tap for late Thursday night - Friday-CNY

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Thursday Daytime:

The weather over central New York through sunset Thursday will be dry with no travel issues.

Some sun could mix in with the clouds during the middle of the day but regardless temperatures will remain above normal. Syracuse could approach 50 degrees.

Thursday Evening:

Precipitation will move into central New York from the southwest during the first part of the night. Early in the evening rain (perhaps mixing with snow) will move across the Finger Lakes. Rain should move into the Syracuse area at or just before midnight.

Thursday Overnight:

As one storm over Pennsylvania weakens and a new storm strengthens just off the East Coast our precipitation will increase over central New York. This process is key since the air over us as the storm starts is not hat cold. The strengthening process of the low helps to cool the lower atmosphere you look for a changeover from rain to snow during the overnight.

There will likely several inches of wet snow on the ground by the time you wake up Friday morning.

Friday:

Our snow will be at its heaviest for the Friday morning causing a rough commute but the snow continues through the day Friday.

By Friday evening the snow is winding down but not before a storm accumulation of 5-10 inches around the Syracuse area. However, elevation will play a key role in how much snow falls.

Over higher terrain (where the change to snow occurs sooner) look for accumulations of a foot or more. That would roughly be from Route 20 south and also over the Tug Hill.

In addition to the wet snow on Friday, the wind ends up rather gusty out of the north-northwest. Given the wet snow could weigh down trees, the addition of winds gusting past 30 mph brings up the possibility of isolated power outages. Again, that is most likely over higher terrain.

Snow will taper to just a few snow showers Friday night into Saturday.

NY weather ping.

No word on lake effect after this storm yet either and it usually happens when the storm pulls off the coast.

Lots of places and schools already closed, which is VERY unusual this far out. They usually wait until that morning. Also travel advisories already out for several counties.

Closings and delays....

We put a “Closed due to snow” sign on the door where I work ... just in case. I work at one of the very few places where the owner does snow days - unpaid unfortunately. A number of the employees live a ways out, so it is a good thing that he doesn’t insist everyone drive in no matter how bad it is.

Major storm hitting rural Eastern California and Western Nevada tonight and tomorrow too, whiteout, blizzard conditions, and several feet of snow making travel extremely dangerous, but no one cares because the MSN is hundreds of miles away from here.

No news person, except local, ever reports on our storms even though 11 feet fell one year during a single storm. Not a word out of ABC News.

Right now it's raining because it's 35 degrees outdoors. My two shovels are waxed and have 100 lbs of rock salt handy.

My weather forecast:

Tonight Rain and snow, becoming all snow after 3am. Low around 31. Northeast wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Friday Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 32. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 11 to 17 inches possible.

We have about 4 in. of very heavy snow. Much more is forcast. A tree just fell in our side yard and since we live in the woods, I hope a slight breeze picks up to get the snow off the trees. Very heavy stuff and with the ground so saturated with water, this could get nasty.

It’s raining here right now but we are in the very heavy snowfall band.

And this is going to be heavy and wet. which makes it all the worse.

No sea water with hundreds of miles of me. I think the daffodils will be OK here.
