Britain flooded with super-strength cannabis which could be driving mental health problems
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 27 February 2018 • 10:30PM | Sarah Knapton

Nearly all cannabis on Britain’s streets is now super-strength skunk that could be fueling the rise in mental health problems, scientists have warned.

Researchers at King’s College London tested almost 1,000 police seizures from Kent, Derbyshire, Merseyside, Sussex and the capital in 2016, and found 94 percent were of a dangerously high potency.

In 2005, just 51 percent of cannabis sold on the street was sinsemilla, also known as skunk.

Dr. Marta Di Forti, Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist at King’s College warned that the powerful drug placed Britain’s 2.1 million cannabis users at risk of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, delusions and hallucinations. […]

The researchers also found that in normal cannabis resin, the average concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the main psychoactive component — had risen by 50 percent since 2005, from four percent to six percent. In contrast, the ratio of antipsychotic cannabidiol (CBD), which helps mitigate the drug’s psychoactive effects, had fallen dramatically.

Skunk has around 14 percent THC, and is more dangerous because it contains very small amount of CBD. …

Dang. So much for legalization. If you legalize it, you’ll have to cut the crap out of it with inert substances to keep the using population from becoming deranged.

Technically Arizona does, for medicinal card holders, but only if you are 25 miles away from a dispensary... That eliminates anybody in the Metropolitan areas. I grew it myself for the first year we had rights, legally by our state law, the next year, dispensaries were open and everybody lost grow rights. If the feds would de-schedule it and get the hell out of the way, I would make a career change and move into that industry.
With carpel tunnel or some nerve issue in my shoulder, using the mouse kills me and my drawing days are numbered. I am good for awhile, but a big job with lots of work (10-14 hours) day after day, I just cant do anymore. The new BIM software is even more mouse intensive than Autocadd is.

CBD is where it is at... But CBD oil is way too expensive. I dont need the THC part, but it is free that way when I grow it myself. It is simply NOT the evil weed everybody believes it to be, I also learned edibles is the only way to go...

Recreational legalization here failed 2 years ago because the bill was terrible.

Don’t worry, it’s harmless and probably better than eating Tide Pods or bath salts.

The marijana intentionally increased the hallucinogenic content in the weed they sell, fostering it on an unsuspecting public. A class action lawsuit should be filed against this practice...

Oh, look, the anti-smoking mafia is yet again too stoned to bother going after this.

So what? They'll fit right in with the rest of the delusional progs over there.

This is amusing sensationalism and some folks on FR are ignorant enough to fall for it.

99% of weed produced in America in the last 30 years is sinsemilla.

And the average top shelf pot in the store runs 18-20% THC.

Why is it the MILLIONS now smoking weed aren’t dead or in the funny farm with such SEVERE numbers as that!?!?!?!?!

“If cannabis causes you mental health problems you already had mental health problems.”

In 100% of cases.

Every single time.

Without dispute.

As certain as the day is long.

This is amusing sensationalism

The UK press is rabidly anti-pot ... I'm not sure why.

Thanks for the ping.

Seems Britain has a hysterical prohibitionist problem too.

“I grew it myself for the first year we had rights, legally by our state law, the next year, dispensaries were open and everybody lost grow rights.”

Nevada has the same goofy rules. It’s to preserve the state’s cut...taxes.

But if you look carefully at the state law, the violation of the 25mile rule is likely and INFRACTION punishable by a $100 ticket and the loss of your crop.

If the cops are even enforcing it, which is unlikely.

And over the course of the last 48 years I have known dozens of “frequent smokers” and none of them are “demented” in any way.

Now we’ve both entered our anecdotal evidence into the discussion.

I was going to just do it and argue in court if i got caught... i could not afford what the disensary sold it for.

When i moved here to Arizona, drinking age was 18, which i had just turned. First of the year, they raised to 21... we were grandfathered in, they said it was unconstitutional to give us a right and then take it away again for no reason.

My daughter and grandson moved back in, we had nurses in and out, plus his social worker once a month, he was born with gastroscesis and went on ssdi before he was released from hospital, I just went without, that was about when I found the cbd oil that worked better anyway.

“My daughter and grandson moved back in, we had nurses in and out, plus his social worker once a month”

In the City of Sacramento it’s against regulations to grow outdoors. The penalty is insignificant, but my neighbor put all his in big clay pots. About 8-10 gallons.

He has a hand truck. If he is expecting visitors he just moves them to the garage for the day.

The plants don’t get very big so he only gets about 4-5 ounces of bud per plant. But he says it’s enough for him and his kids.

6 plants per year.
