Weekend Box Office: 'Black Panther' Scores Record $108M in Second Outing
Hollywood Reporter ^ | February 25, 2018 | Pamela McClintock

Ryan Coogler's groundbreaking superhero pic Black Panther continued to defy all expectations in its sophomore outing, grossing an estimated $108 million from 4,020 theaters to score the top second weekend of all time behind 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Disney and Marvel title reached the $400 million mark domestically in only 10 days after dropping a narrow 47 percent in its second weekend. That's one of the smallest declines ever for a superhero title, as well as one of the smallest for a film launching north of $200 million (the bigger the opening, the bigger the drop in many instances). Thanks to Black Panther, domestic revenue year-to-date is now up a dazzling 12.5 percent over the same period in 2017 after running behind by more than 1 percent two weeks ago, according to comScore.

Overseas, the pic earned $83.8 million for an international tally of $304 million and a global haul of $704 million, including $50 million for Imax theaters. It has yet to open in Russia, Japan and China.

In North America, Black Panther — which became the fourth movie to cross $100 million in its second weekend — earned more in its second outing than a number of 2017 tentpoles did in their first weekend, including Wonder Woman ($103.3 million), Justice League ($93 million) and The Fate of the Furious ($98.8 million). And it tied with 2015's Jurassic World in reaching $400 million faster than any film in history behind The Force Awakens.

"The movie continues to play ahead of our modeling," says Disney's film distribution head Dave Hollis. "It has become a cultural phenomenon. This is a movie audiences were hoping for, and that delivered beyond expectations."

That isn’t hard considering on average overall movie sales have been falling over the last several years.

I guess people are tired of the old retread comic book heroes. I can’t watch another Superman. Oh look, Spider-man has the teen angst. He’s learning how to shoot his webs. Watch out Aunt May. Zzzzzzzzz. So they had to go back into the old days, and find characters no one had ever heard of. Black Panther and Ant man. Maybe they’ll resurrect Captain Sticky. He had a peanut butter gun.

Thank goodness.

It’s about time that Americans of African Descent had somebody to look up to.

Speaking of Spider-Man, I much prefer the Yamashiro Takuya version (from the Toei TV series). No angst there.

And since they made the alternate-universe Gwen Stacy into yet another Spider-Woman (nicknamed “Spider-Gwen”), I wonder if they’re thinking of making a movie of that comic book series.

Maybe militant blacks who see racism lurking in every corner will STFU now.

I would have thought white guilt would have run its course by now... but apparently not.

Even if a very high turnout of the black moviegoers in the USA went to see this, they are only 1/8 of the population. That’s not enough to set records.

... only 1/8th ??

If you watch more than 30 minutes of TV each day you would swear that blacks are over half of the USA population. You would have to believe that they are also the brightest race on the planet and all of our technology came from quick, fertile black minds. You would also have to believe that white families are grateful when they can adopt or at least include blacks in their families.

There is a Chevrolet ad where a white salesman and a white customer walk around a new SUV talking about the good design of that model. Then the car doors open and out comes a group of blacks that the ad would like us to accept as all being family of the white customer. Are they kidding?

Seriously folks, there is an agenda in the entertainment industry promoting that concept. I don’t know if there are laws or other rules forcing producers and ad agencies to foster the racial blending we are forded to see, but nothing in real life echoes the crap we see on TV these days.

Absolutely right.

It’s not just race... it’s sex (or the perversion thereof)... it’s religion (Islam is cool, everything else is Republican and stupid)... it’s also competence... Almost all doctors and nurses are black or brown, ministering advertised medicines to their dimwitted but grateful white patients...

We could go on

Four of my family members went to see the movie, separately, with their own group of friends. None were black. None.

Apparently it’s just a good film.

Apparently it’s just a good film.

Being possibly the only theater film out today without half the cast being GiBLeT gheys makes it worth going to.

Growing up on comics as a kid, I thought it is simply a good movie. People are reading way too much into it imo.
