The great compounding tragedy of the slaughter at Stoneman Douglas High School is that it could have been prevented and stopped, if only law enforcement had done its job.
It's not a shade of gray, it's a clear fail.
Federal and local police did not follow policy or best practices, and a monster was unimpeded by law enforcement either before or during his rampage.
This isn't about the gun debate, or school security, it's about cops who simply didn't do their jobs.
On four separate occasions, special agents of the FBI and deputies of the Broward County Sheriff's Office failed to follow their own procedure. And during the attack, when the armed and experienced school resource officer was the only thing between innocent students and teachers and a gunman, that officer went outside and hid.
For four minutes, as riflefire sounded from the school, the 2014 Broward County school resource officer of the year was safely outside hiding behind something.
And it took his very political boss eight days to say so.
These are hard truths, especially for those who love and appreciate law enforcement.
But where much is given, much is required. And in this instance, not even the bare minimum was done.
The FBI, informed of an internet posting in which someone claimed to be an aspiring school shooter, made a perfunctory interview and pursued it no further. Contacted a second time, with specific information about the gunman's identity, address, armaments and intentions, the FBI did absolutely nothing.
No inquiry was made, no information was relayed, the eventual gunman was not interviewed.
The FBI simply blew it off.
Just like the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
In February 2016 and November 2017, deputies were given detailed tips from citizens that said the eventual gunman was a likely school shooter.
Nothing was done, even though the shooter was known to the sheriff's office and had been the subject of dozens of calls for assistance.
"See something, say something" from concerned citizens became, "Hear something, do nothing," with listless police.
And then, with all the warnings ignored, when the bullets began to fly, the Broward County deputy whose specific job it was to protect the school left the building and took up a defensive position outside.
While an unarmed football coach inside rushed the gunman and died protecting innocent children.
The number for a cop is 9-1-1. I don't know what the number for a football coach is.
Smooth-faced boys in Junior ROTC uniforms ran to the aid of frightened students while some spineless son of a bitch in a police uniform ran outside to hide.
A spineless son of a bitch who, by the way, had been an SRO for 27 years, was the state school officer of the year a couple of decades ago, and lived on school property for free in return for watching it.
And has made north of $100,000 a year.
Called on his cowardice, he filed the paperwork to start collecting his lifelong pension.
In this matter, the thin blue line took a powder, and 17 people are dead as a result.
And what's troubling is that this malfeasance, this failure to perform the most basic of duties, occurred in two separate FBI field offices and involved three unconnected deputies.
It wasn't one isolated dirtbag who blew off his responsibilities, it was at least five separate officers in five separate situations.
And there are 17 dead people, and a nation thrown into angry debate.
Because these cops didn't do their duty.
That's a hard truth. But it is the truth.
And it ought to be the cause of much soul searching by the American law-enforcement community.

If Israel were a police chief, he’d be fired by now. But he’s an elected sheriff. So it will be up to the voters.
Cops were under standing orders to ignore teen criminal activity at that school.

Not only did the school get federal funding, but locals were able to fudge crime statistics and claim juvenile delinquency was down 60%!
The level of corruption is so intense - I would not be surprised if Peterson was under orders to STAND DOWN while children were being murdered.
Was he a coward during those 4 minutes he stood outside while Cruz was firing? Or did Sherriff Israel direct him to “set up a perimeter”?
Broward is very liberal or black or Jewish or Hispanic....used to be Davie was old south whites but they may have died out
Six of the kids who died were Jewish which is an incredible statistic in this tragic event....the odds that being the case is only possible in a few communities like Monsey NY or north Miami Beach or parts of Brooklyn or Manhattan or Forest Hills
And a Jewish sheriff....not something most Jews I’ve know yearn for

IF the ‘live feed’ that Sheriff Israel thought they were receiving was really a TAPE DELAY transmission of over 20 min delay, I don’t know how we can blame him for a slow response.
I believe that he DID NOT know that there was a 20 minute tape delay. I don’t know a single LEO in the entire country who would have agreed to such a setup.
The School Board of Broward County needs to pay the piper for such a decision.
Can you imagine ANY person in this country with the investment of security cameras on their property installing them with a 20 MIN TAPE DELAY?
IF the Sheriff was blindsided by this development, I cannot blame him or his other officers.
I can blame the coward who lived on the property for free & still made north of $100,000 a year as the ‘school resource officer’. He needs to be hung by his crotch decorations.
Don’t lay all those shootings on the cops. I guess it would be more appropriate to say “Lay Enforcement”, thus including the FBI as well.

Obama caused the shooting?
Every single level, all filled by people who demand to be in charge of everything, failed MISERABLY.
Read it, and see the lengths to which the Broward County officials entered into collusion together to minimize legal/police encounters.
If you want to eliminate mental health and school safety issues, don't rely on centralized Government or the bureaucracy to protect you, and your children.
Instead, establish school safety through parental responsibility and liability, or establish a position of "media monitoring" through the school district
since most of the younger students have internet access and/or use of cellular phone, and frequently voice open and unrestricted thoughts and emotions online.
In the absence of parental supervision, since most parents work, or at least one parent may be involuntary absent or missing altogether,
juvenile supervision and restraint, unfortunately has fallen upon the school district which is currently unable,or unwilling, to accept this responsibility.
End school violence where it is most exposed and expressed: at the home; at school, among schoolmates, and those who know the perp best and may have daily contact.
Arming teachers, Armed School Resource (SRO)officers should be the last line of defense, the "fail-safe" if you will.
Use intelligence and logic, rather than emotion for a "knee-jerk" reaction to end school violence.
Part of a dark comedy of law enforcement management dropping the ball from the FBI to the local sheriff.
Competent, professional law enforcement is more than setting up Trump associates with "Gotcha" questions and ticketing speeders.
It might have been more professional to discover this secusity camera delay during a planning session to prepare for such an emergency and a practice run-through to make sure all the pieces were in place and working rather than wait to discover it during an actual live fire shooting event.
Prior planning and preparation would probably have saved many lives.

“As a Broward County resident for nearly 30 years and an elected official for most of that time, my heart breaks for the victims, their families, friends, and loved ones. As a parent of a Broward County high school student, and as someone with friends whose children attend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, it is gut wrenching that another senseless school shooting has occurred, this time in our community.
In the United States of America, it is simply unacceptable that we allow children to run for their lives with their backpacks on. Unacceptable that we allow parents to fear for the worst while they wait to hear back from their kids, and unacceptable that we allow survivors of school shootings to live with a trauma that can never be explained away.
I stand with my community and our families and ask all Americans to keep the parents, siblings, spouses and loved ones in their prayers this evening. No American anywhere should have to feel the pain that Broward County feels today, and too many communities have felt across our country countless times before. We must do something about this senseless epidemic of gun violence and we must do it now.”

This “sheriff” for being an exSWAT Captain, being according to him, not aware of the delay?...talk about situation awareness...had no (early on) idea where his deputy was?...no clue about past actions with the nutcase....really surprise about the 20 minute delay....now attacking the NRA....PLEASE... How come their not releasing the dispatch recordings?...
