It was an idyllic but cold holiday morning near Daly City's Thornton Beach, the kind of morning that draws families and dog walkers to the coast. But just after 11:30 a.m., one man's attempt to save his dog cost him his life.
The National Park Service confirms the 67-year-old man was trying to get to his stranded dog, which had made its way part way down a cliff, just west of Skyline Drive.
But then he slipped and fell as many as 500 feet to his death.
Firefighters had to race to beat the high tide to get to the man, but it was too late.
While a California Highway Patrol helicopter lifted firefighters and the man's body from the area, his family members arrived to retrieve the dogs and console one another, clearly devastated by what had happened.
The area is just south of Thornton Beach and west of Daly City's Palisades Park, a popular area for dog walkers and families, but also one that can be as dangerous as it is beautiful.
"Stay on the trails, especially I mean the ice plants will be slippery with the moisture," said Rath Skallion. "That's why I can see someone slipping on the edge."
The CHP helicopter with the man's body touched down in a parking lot near Thornton Beach and the body was then transferred to a San Mateo County Coroner's van.
The Park Service warns people not to try to retrieve stranded dogs by themselves, saying the dog often survives, while the person might not.
Sad. I can see how this could happen. It would be super hard to walk away and it would be super easy to over-estimate your own ability to climb down and rescue the pet you love.
The one redeeming this is that where this poor man lived in California he’ll have eternal life as a Democrat voter.
Even at 11;30am, the morning dew probably left that area slicked down with water. You can forget just how high you are if you’re only looking at the area around you. Sad situation.
I can't put my finger on exactly why, but something bothers me about the use of "as many as" in this context.
Dumshit left his dog off leash in that terrain? Hope the dog is all right.
They don’t need dead voters in this state.
Good on you buddy. God is smiling upon you. You are the best for your huge heart and caring. RIP.

...
I only clicked to see if the dog is OK.
The TV report was vague, but it seems like the dog survived, because their was footage of the apparent dog.
Poor man and his family
Sad indeed. I wonder if - given time - the dog could have climbed back up to safety all by itself?
I thought I read recently that a lot of these local news stations are having stories being written by news bots. While the grammar is correct, it's not common to write it that way. A bot wouldn't know the difference.
There is also the fact that depending on the spot on that beach, the top of the cliff is between 200 and 500 feet from the sand. Maybe she's coming off a hard drunk and mailed the story in.
The dog probably found its way back to the top of the cliff on its own.
You might be on to something. That particular turn of phrase in the context used is not something a “bot” would necessarily detect as being discordant.
IT’S A DOG
It’s that last Millimeter that kills you, unless you have a Heart Attack on the way down.
Lazy reporting. That means he could have fallen 10 feet or 500 feet. Ms. Anthony needs to actually do a little investigative reporting and get an answer to how high the cliff is before she submits the story.
Blessed are those who care for the wonderful creatures God gave to us.

Probably not.
We had one trapped on a cliff that was above an off ramp of an Interstate————it’s a miracle that an alert driver even noticed it because it could not be seen at all from the top side.
