Is the Yellowstone supervolcano close to erupting? Scientists detect more than 200 earthquakes

Latest swarm began Feb 8, about 8mi northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana As of February 18, the scientists say they've detected more than 200 quakes Still, experts say the activity is 'relatively weak,' and alert level remains normal

A new swarm of earthquakes has cropped up at the Yellowstone supervolcano, with more than 200 small temblors detected in the last 10 days alone.

According to experts with the US Geological Survey, the latest swarm began on February 8 in a region roughly eight miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana – and, it’s increased dramatically in the days since.

But for now, scientists say there’s no reason to worry.

While the earthquakes are likely caused by a combination of processes beneath the surface, the current activity is said to be ‘relatively weak,’ and the alert level at the supervolcano remains at ‘normal.’

According to the USGS, the new swarm is occurring in about the same location as the Maple Creek swarm last summer, which brought roughly 2,400 earthquakes in a four-month span.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations picked up the first quakes just over a week ago, counting more than 200 as of February 18.

But, the experts say there are likely many more that have gone undetected.

‘The present swarm started on February 8, with a few events occurring per day,’ according to USGS.

‘On February 15, seismicity rates and magnitudes increased markedly. As of the night of February 18, the largest earthquake in the swarm is M2.9, and none of the events have been felt. All are occurring about 8 km (5 mi) beneath the surface.’

“I’m probably a bit rusty but I did get some practice with Mount St. Helen’s ash.”

I was a sophomore in high school at the time but do remember the explosion. Here in eastern Minnesota, I don’t recall a lot of ash fall but do remember the sunsets were more vivid than usual for a while.

I live at the bottom of the “K” in Kill Zone.

Have a pocked-marked lava ‘stone’ from the last eruption...it was excavated from about 30’ down during a building project.

Really cool!

Bear in mind this chart mostly relates to immediate threat from the ash for suffocation, or a bit later structures suffering roof collapse.

Prior large ash eruptions and sulfur emissions have blocked enough sunlight to drop temps and otherwise harm crops and vegetation. Likely a decade to clear the sky.

Probably trying to distract us from the Sinabung eruption.

how many inches of ash will collapse the roof to the average home do you reckon? I am pessimistic about even tertiary ash zones.

I'm optimistic that the "interesting" factor will be dialed all the way up to 11 on that fateful day.

Doesn’t matter if it is. When and if it blows off, there ain’t nothing we can do about it.

there are real dangers out there, but what can we do about it?...if there is something we can do, lets do it, otherwise no use worrying your whole life away...

besides, I've read some accounts where the world will survive and so will the US....

We got about 4" of ash where I was living in Northern Idaho. Used a snow shovel and then a broom to clear it off my driveway. Want to wear a mask over your nose and mouth if you ever have to move ash or you will have some really dirty boogers.

I’d worry more about the New Madrid. A while back i was a map that showed the result of an 8.1 or so on the NM. I’d be 300 ft underwater but my sister would have beach front property near Omaha.

I'm in NE Kansas now. I'm guessing puts me in range of significant impact. If that quake pushes the water back in the Mississippi like last time, is likely to be a cascading effect up the Missouri River, the then Kansas River. I only live a couple of miles from the junction of the Kansas River and the Big Blue River.

“how many inches of ash will collapse the roof to the average home do you reckon?”

i suspect the main problem with ash fallout in tertiary areas is air quality, which could be potentially fouled for decades as even a few inches of such dust would be completely pervasive and practically impossible to get rid of ...
