'Black Panther' Delivers Fifth Largest Opening of All-Time, Heading Toward $218M+ 4-Day Debut
Box Office Mojo ^ | February 18, 2018

Posted on 02/18/2018 11:23:05 AM PST by SMGFan

Dominating the weekend and delivering one of the largest opening weekends of all-time, Disney and Marvel's Black Panther topped the President's Day weekend box office, outperforming its nearest competitor by nearly $175 million based on estimates. As a result, fellow new wide releases were left in the dust with both Lionsgate's Early Man and PureFlix's Samson struggling in the low single digits. The weekend did, however, have other notable performances such as Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which became the studio's second highest grossing domestic release of all-time, and Fox's The Greatest Showman, which has now topped $150 million at the domestic box office.

Atop the weekend box office with an estimated $192 million for the three-day weekend, Black Panther delivered the fifth largest three-day domestic opening in history and is currently expected to finish around $218 million for the four-day holiday weekend. The performance is also the largest February opening of all-time, the largest President's Day weekend opening of all-time and gives Disney eight of the top ten domestic openings of all-time. Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther is the eighteenth release in the franchise and the ninth to open with over $100 million. It's also the second largest opening in the MCU, behind only The Avengers ($207.4m) and topping the $191 million debut for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“How about number of tickets sold as a % of population.
That might give a better picture.”

Throw in easy access to a theater as well. In 1939 some folks may have been a hundred miles from the nearest theater and movies were a rare treat.

It is about a leader taking care of his people from black racists who want to destroy whites and everyone who stands against them.

Most overrated movie of all time was “Gone With the Wind.”

Absolutely!

Am I wrong but the people who created Black Panther are white.

What complaints? There is hardly any negative press except for comments on lil ole Free Republic. It’s marketing genius. The white guys who created this are reaping the rewards of Black exploitation.

Not only white, but probably Jewish. A majority of blacks will never get the stereotypical irony. Just a couple of Mister Landlords with a film production studio.

Well the interesting thing will be what will be the drop off next weekend. While it will be successful, I want to see the drop off and what this film does world wide. Especially in the Asian markets.

In the 1930’s some 80 million people a week went to the movies. That was 65% of the population. That has gone down markedly since 1965 for a variety of reasons. Today the average attendance is about 10 Million weekly.

I see. Kinda shocked by those numbers. Guess I was thinking mostly of my fathers stories, who grew up in western NC and a trip to a theater was a treat.

Yeah those are amazing numbers, but keep in mind the limited entertainment choices, radio and the movies. Prices to go to movies was pretty low and most people might go twice a week.

All the movie studios had their own theater chains and there was steady product coming out.

The demarcation line in movie attendance was about 1965. That marked the last year there was overwhelming family movies out, movies without gross profanity, nudity, etc.. You can see the very real dramatic decline in attendance after that.

It is sad that the average movie attendance is what it is and what does that say. It says that the film industry has forgotten it’s roots and putting out a product people want to see. Then of course there are so many other entertainment choices out there.

I thought this movie was about the REAL black panthers. Bobby Seale, Huey Newton, Angela Davis, etc.....

Do you honestly think such a film would be a massive hit?

Read King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochshield. Your understanding of pre-colonial Africa is based on insufficient information. The book isn’t just informative, it’s a gripping read.

Why are people still giving their money to horrible, liberal movie studio executives?

My son and his friends just got back from seeing this film, and they made two observations:
1) They were the only white people in the theater; and
2) The movie didn’t just suck - it was one of the worst movies they had ever seen.

1965 did seem like the last "normal" year, didn't it? I was just a kid then, but I sensed, the following year, everything getting weird.
