A Colorado couple said they sold everything they owned to buy a sailboat and set out for the open seas together.
Within two days, their dream became a nautical nightmare. On their way to Key West, Tanner Broadwell and Nikki Walsh's voyage abruptly ended in Johns Pass off Madeira Beach, Fla., when their 28-foot sailboat struck something underwater Wednesday night.

“Sorry to hear. Hopefully theyll save up again and buy a bigger boat.”
Better ... not bigger
I don’t think a 28’ $5,000 sailboat would be insurable.
And better boat!
A few years back, we had a sailboat run aground here. never got a clear account of how they accomplished it where they did. Seems they took a literal straight course to the harbor, which would have not steered the around a rather rocky point.
Dunno, but it was a couple sailing their new boat from SoCal or Mexico to Hawaii.

Was Captain Ron involved in this incident?
Besides providing the motivation ?

According to the Daily Mail it was a 1969 Columbia. The keel either fell off or broke off. Its a safe bet those keel bolts havent been looked at in more than a decade.
A 28 ft noat is just on the edge of livable.

I just read a thing the other day that said that line was improvised by Roy Scheider...
Don’t know if it is true.
Yes, the keel bolts are most likely culprits and they were probably not aware of the risk of loose or corroded bolts on a boat looks this. The keel is the counterweight and keeps this type of boat upright. Plus, if it gets rippled off on a sand bar, you’ve got a big hole in the bottom.
A boat this size does ok in blue water, at least in the Caribbean where they were headed. Not luxurious by any means.
Regarding insurance, we insure ours, not so much for replacement value but for liability and salvage.
They are looking at another $1OK to have that boat salvaged.
From the pics on Daily Mail it appears to be close to the dock.
The whole story is screwy, sinking everything into this tub and down to $90. What were they planning on eating ?!?
They were certain they were too cool to bother to learn to sail and get some experience in waters somewhat calmer than certain parts off the Atlantic Coast.
Charts?
Whazzat??
It cost them ten grand total. I would think if it was their sole primary residence they could find one company that would ensure it.
