A Colorado couple said they sold everything they owned to buy a sailboat and set out for the open seas together.
Within two days, their dream became a nautical nightmare. On their way to Key West, Tanner Broadwell and Nikki Walsh's voyage abruptly ended in Johns Pass off Madeira Beach, Fla., when their 28-foot sailboat struck something underwater Wednesday night.

Lot’s of people have made amazing small boat voyages and the Columbia is/was a well found boat.

I hear ya. I looked at some of those aft cabin Carvers. IIRC the salon area converted to another temp stateroom. It had some kind of retractable curtain. The one I settled on was a 390 Searay Express. Fantastic forward stateroom, then a great kids room with bunk beds. Kept looking for years and never got it. Gave up and bought the smaller Searay 30 with twin 150 outboards.
Like the day I berthed in Leamington in 2009, on the way down the St. Lawrence, and the dock buckled in heavy winds?!? Vicious; too shallow for me! ;-)
bump for later
Scares me that I understand all that, hilarious!
Given the shallow draft of knarrs they might have been better off
That channel is marked....they hit the underwater shoals from old jetties is my guess
Over 100 commercial fisherman use that pass
And a big fleet of man o wars too for charter
It’s an easy pass to be honest
Imagine they were in Hawk Channel at night after revelry on Duvall
Indeed
38 foot LOA is pretty much in general starting point for world travel
That and a nice draft
It’s done is less but not me
It was a good thing worst weather I usually endured way out there was at night
You could tell by the mountain swells at gun metal morning that it had blown that night
I’ve been in 100 mile gusts and was too stupid to realize my peril
Green water pooping us constantly
As an old man now I’d shite myself
I hope they can float a new loan.
I said Iffy. I am an experienced Sailor, but not in the open Ocean. I would be very hesitant to take a 28’ boat into the Atlantic, but I’m sure there are better sailors than me that could. I just think living on a 28’ boat would be very tight, again not undoable, but uncomfortable. I just think they show signs of needing a better plan. Maybe next time will be good for them, they still have their health.
“... they still have their health. ...”
But they still have the brain that thought that was a good idea! Let see if can learn from experience.
Lucky, lucky people. God said Hold on, there, you two.
Congrats! We do have to keep certain things from the masses, don’t we?
Spent many a weekend in Leamington out of West Harbor. The 26’ Skiff was just too small. Moved up to a 34 C&C and would love to bring it back to the area. Much prefer Erie to Lake Michigan.

Looks like it’s working! I’m gonna go sink my boat and get a bigger one!
Oh, and in the meantime, learn to sail!
With my dark blonde hair and blue eyes, it’s probably a good thing that I was never drawn to boats. Those physical traits do not do well in the sun.
Up to nearly $9000.
Love it - humor and wit is what keeps us sane - you added at least 36 hours to my sanity bucket....
A little advice to the couple.
Forget repairing the boat, buy a hot air balloon. What could go wrong!
it’s at 11001 now..
I always thought you got insurance for that stuff...
