PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Olympic officials are scrambling to contain an outbreak of norovirus at the Winter Games,
which open here Friday, after 41 security guards fell ill.

More than 1,200 people have been quarantined while they are tested for the virus, which has caused vomiting and diarrhea among those affected,
and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to make up the shortfall in security staff.

The outbreak, revealed just three days before Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, is particularly unwelcome given the security concerns surrounding these Games, which are taking place just 50 miles from the border with North Korea.

More than 900 military personnel have been deployed to take over security at 20 Olympic venues
until all the affected workers are able to return to duty, the organizing committee said in a statement.

Norovirus is highly contagious and commonly spread through contaminated food or water or contaminated surfaces, according to the Mayo Clinic.
It also can be spread through close contact with an infected person.

Symptoms usually begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last one to three days.
There's no specific treatment for norovirus infection, the clinic says on its website.

Well, that's a nice way to put it.

Things are pretty bad now. Some of policemen and cooks working there are infected, too. The virus is now spreading to surrounding towns and villages. I hear that it is a nasty virus. Not really fatal but causing non-stop diarrhea and vomiting. If athletes get it, his/her chance of winning will become nil. If anybody knows athletes competing there, make sure they survive the outbreak. Bring in their food from outside.

You can pick it up from any contaminated surface, not just from food. Anything that’s been contaminated with an infected person’s vomit and/or feces.

More likely just lots and lots of folks who don’t/won’t stay home when sick and refuse to wash their paws.

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
Now they have shipped in 200 “cheerleaders” - what are they carrying?

I have a friend over there right now who is a cameraman with the Olympic Broadcasting Service. I’ve messaged him to ask if the OBS is concerned.

This guy’s been to every Olympics since Vancouver in 2010. Working for the OBS is by invitation only, and they don’t invite you (or invite you BACK) unless you’re good.

If he says anything, I’ll let you know.

I came down with it last Wednesday night. Violent vomiting, diarrhea then a mild fever throughout Thurs. By Friday I was almost 100% good to go. Mostly weak due to lack of eating.......I had the flu shot so I think that helped lessen the symptoms........

Initially authorities at the site did not take it seriously, allowing it to spread like wildfire.

That’s a shame. They oughta be doing PSAs advising people how the virus is spread, telling them to stay away from the public while sick and to wash their dang paws.

At the moment, the prime suspect is contaminated food given to some personnel at the site.

That virus is some bad stuff. Friends daughter currently being treated but now improving. Watch what you eat, where you eat it and above all practice good hygiene. His daughter is a fanatic about all that stuff and she still got it.

Bring in food from the outside

Would even that help? The food would have to be stored, prepared, and served.

I wouldn't want to be there. Flu and other illnesses have been a problem in many countries this year. People bring with them different strains and not the built-up immunities they might need to fight unfamiliar diseases. Who knows what germs could come in with North Koreans and their isolated population? Add to that mix that the Olympics are described by some as a giant hookup for the athletes. Another factor....will athletes mask symptoms, thus spreading disease, so they don't have to drop out?

I'm being a regular Debbie Downer. A few years ago, I was on a transatlantic cruise which was on the edge of having to declare a Norovirus outbreak. Crew and cruisers went through a real strict routine and got educated on how easily Norovirus and other shared diseases such as Legionairre's can spread so easily in environments with a lot of people from diverse environments in close quarters.

The Flu vaccine would have nothing to do with it as it isn’t the Flu
