When we came home tonight, my husband smelled cooking coming from a neighbors place, and said it reminded him of a childhood favorite, Tuna Noodle Casserole. He hasnt made it in a long time, but grew up on a recipe that used the typical canned-soup approach.
On the food network site, Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond has a from-scratch recipe that looks a lot better:

Another recipe from prepared items that we used to make was Corned Beef Hash, using canned corn beef and mashed potatoes. But if you are having corned beef for St. Patricks day, heres a more interesting recipe for your leftovers, from the Happy Money Saver site:

I’m mainly worried about urinary tract issues. None of the cats that my husband and I have had over 30 years has suffered from it; but my childhood cat had it bad. Food was probably not very good back then; but I seem to recall that there are arguments even today as to dry/wet with regard to this.
We have always done dry for that reason. About two years ago Sol had to have all her teeth removed except for the top two fang teeth & bottom two teeth. She hoovers up her wet food! I sprinkle nutritional yeast on her morning food. I did not realize cats could get such badvgum disease.
Do they recommend wet or dry to prevent urinary problems? And yes that is always a worry.
That’s what I can’t figure out. There seem to be opinions on both sides.
Our cats have always had a mix; though the current ones seem to only want a few licks of the wet. I think getting their little bit of wet has become mainly a ‘ritual’.
(Cats are big on ‘rituals’ ;-)
Our older cat gets those crystals as well. Very painful for them. She is on Royal Canin SO and is doing great. The younger one eats it too so he hopefully won’t ever get the crystals. The city water here is VERY hard - lots of scale and minerals - so I give them filtered or distilled water only. So far so good.
My boy cat with the crystals that can eat grains loves the SO. And I think it is so much better than hills because it not only prevents the formation of the crystals but it also dissolves them. With the hills brand Id have to have a separate formula for the dissolution. However, my cat is allergic to something in the SO!
Every single time I have fed it to him, within a week he starts sneezing like crazy. Then he eventually start doing the choking thing with a lot of salivating. It has happened about three times now, so I dont think its a coincidence :-( I dont see anything weird in the ingredients.
Bummer. He gobbled it down like crazy, so it apparently tastes much better than the C/D
My vet told me wet. That one reason behind the crystals is that the urine becomes very concentrated since cats are not big drinkers. I also recommended to get a fountain to encourage them to drink. I got one of those petwells ones, and Ive seen them stare at it and play in the water. Not sure if they are drinking more!
Ive never had a cat with crystals until I got the silver Persians. Perhaps with all the inbreeding thats one of the problems they can get. All of mutt cats have been much more healthy.
I can affirm that! My girl that is allergic to grains plus has struvite crystals is on a raw food diet. I brush all my cats teeth every other day, and her teeth are in much worse shape than the ones that eat kibble. Even with my brushing them and scraping the tartar when it appears, she still has more issues. She gets a lot more tartar buildup and I just noticed that she lost a bottom tooth :-(
I am enjoying the cat thread this week :-) well, we are talking about cat food also so I guess thats OK
Yes; all of the ‘mutt’ cats that we’ve had have done well.
The same thing is often true of dogs - overbreeding creates a lot of problems.
I really like the BerneDoodle that Diana posted, and wonder if it has any of the ‘Giant’ issues, and what the coat is like (?)
I’ve been thinking that we should be pinging all the cat and dog people to the Cooking Thread this week ;-)
Thanks. Its basically just a great meatball recipe using rice as the breadcrumbs. So the shape with the rice looks like what one would imagine a porcupines cojones would look like. Lol. A fun thing to make.
Oh, my older kids would love this. They make me keep a ton of Nutella in the house.
Wet food, especially the highest quality cans (not fond in supermarkets or pet owners type places), do NOT have enough fat. Weruva and the other good brands just cant afford to put much fat in. Especially if the cat is thin and/or has long hair, you should make a point to add fat a couple times a week, either by giving them a bit of your own fatty meats or adding a good fat to the dish. Popoki is Maine Coon so we have to add fat to help with the hairballs.
Omgosh that looks so cool. Have fun.
It is thought that a low carbohydrate diet is best for cats that have diabetes so canned would be better than dry.
Aw. Great story. I had a feral cat once, took her inside only once she became pregnant. Her name was Mickey because her meow was Mick. She had her kittens and I found them homes but when I went to live in Europe she escaped into the hills again. Loved that cat. It took months for her to come up and let me touch her outside. She was a great cat. Very rusty brown color.
Wow, I don’t know what could be causing those symptoms. Does your vet have any ideas?
It seems male cats tend to urinary problems. Im not even sure diet is to blame.
I gave up on male cats altogether maybe 10 years ago and refuse to live with another one. They were sooooooo lazy with their toileting. The girls are not. The males would make a half hearted attempt to go out or to the box but then clearly say to themselves, why bother, when this Wall is right here? So we have not had any pee sprayed anywhere since we became a cat feminist house. At least not by a cat.
