‘Magnum PI,’ ‘Cagney and Lacey’ Reboots Among Six Pilot Orders at CBS
Variety ^ | January 26, 2018 | Joe Otterson

CBS picked up six pilots for the 2018-2019 season, including reboots of “Cagney and Lacey” and “Magnum P.I.”

“Magnum P.I.” is described as an updated version of the original series that follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home to Hawaii from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. Tom Selleck played the mustachioed Magnum in the original series.

Peter Lenkov, the writer and producer behind current CBS reboots of “Hawaii Five-O” and “MacGyver,” will serve as the writer and executive producer on the new version of the classic 1980s series, which had previously gotten a pilot production commitment at the network. Eric Guggenheim, an executive producer and writer on Lenkov’s “Hawaii Five-O,” will also write and executive produce. John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will also executive produce. CBS Television Studios will co-produce with Universal Television.

“Cagney and Lacey” will follow the titular female police detectives and friends as they keep the streets of L.A. safe. Bridget Carpenter will serve as writer and executive producer. CBS Television Studios will produce with MGM Television.

Carpenter, who is under an overall deal at CBS Television Studios, recently worked as a consulting producer on HBO’s “Westworld” and has previously produced and written shows like “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood.” She also developed the Hulu series “11.22.63.”

The original “Cagney and Lacey” ran for seven seasons and 125 episodes on CBS from 1982 to 1988. The series also spawned four made-for-TV movies in the mid-90s. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly played the title roles for the vast majority of the series, though Loretta Swit played Cagney in the original two-hour pilot and Meg Foster played Lacey for the first season.

Can’t come up with original thoughts so they have to plagiarize. There are many books that could be made into original movies or TV series .... but they would require effort and creativity.

Tom Selleck is 73 years old this week. He still looks pretty damn good.

There was a great show in the early 1970’s starring James McEachin called “Tenafly”. He was playing a Black Private Eye before anyone on TV. Show ran one season but I still remember it and McEachin was a pretty cool actor. Would not be the same now.

Also from the stupid stuff reboot world, “One Day At A Time.”
I don’t even know where to start on how idiotic that idea is.

Magnum was also patriotic and treated Namvets as ordinary guys who served and were not nuts, druggies, or wifebeaters. I just watched part 2 of Did You See the Sunrise on Encore. And any reboot is an awful idea.

Not to mention that they're rebooting "Murphy Brown" with Candace Bergen still playing the title role.

She's 71, for Pete's sake. I mean, even Walter (*spit*) Cronkite was 65 when he retired. Yes, David Brinkley went on to do commentary right up till he turned 77, but his anchoring days stopped when he was 60.

Even in the make-believe world of TV, "Murphy Brown" is a bit long in the tooth.

Hawaii-Five-0: The best thing is that they kept the original theme music.

Some shows were very special at the time they aired and are not meant for a reboot. Some of these shows they want to reboot are like that. The actors from the originals are what them work, you can’t replicate that.

Yes. Most remakes of classic movies or programs just don’t measure up as well. It will be interesting to see who they star in the new magnum — offhand I can’t rhink of a suitable actor

Greatest American Hero (with a female lead) is also being rebooted. Network TV stinks!

You just know that whoever the female lead is, her costume will fit better than Katt's. Will the FBI partner be female too? If so you know it won't be written to clownish, that's only for men.

Oh God I forgot about that one.

“Sledge Hammer: You’ve never played target practice?

Soviet Scientist: In Russia, we practice by shooting dissidents.

Sledge Hammer: Here we call them liberals.”

“Dori: [at Sledge pulling out a gun on some drunk in a bar] Sledge, you can’t solve everything with a gun!

Sledge Hammer: [looking at her slightly puzzled] I know, but I left the bazooka in my car.”

“Dori: Guns don’t kill people...

Sledge Hammer: Yeah, bullets do.”

The TV show “Backstrom” reminded me of it.

I haven’t seen that movie in ages.

A few months ago, I saw a later era Ram Charger for sale. Someone grabbed it.

After the cooling system debacle on the 79 Blazer is finally resolved, an accessory I want is a light bar.
