A new aerial video has provided a rare glimpse into a mysterious Chinese village where residents have lived in subterranean 'pit yards' for some four millennia.
The series of underground dwellings in central China's Henan Province used to have nearly 10,000 homes.
Right now, around 3,000 people still live there while the others have moved to modern homes, according to Chinese media.

I visited the underground cities in Cappadocia while I was a visiting professor in Turkey. Absolutely fascinating. Especially interesting to this engineer was how they were ventilated.

That’s actually the Sidi-Dris Hotel. When a friend went there about fifteen years ago you could stay there for about 25 cents a night.

Except theyre carved in loess (wind deposited glacial silt) and they suck in an earthquake. I think one of the reasons so few are left is due to 10s of thousands dying in an earthquake in that region in the 19th or 20th century.
