Curcumin improves memory and mood, new study says
UCLA ^ | Leigh Hopper

Posted on 01/23/2018 8:35:24 PM PST by BenLurkin

“Exactly how curcumin exerts its effects is not certain, but it may be due to its ability to reduce brain inflammation, which has been linked to both Alzheimer’s disease and major depression,” said Dr. Gary Small, director of geriatric psychiatry at UCLA’s Longevity Center and of the geriatric psychiatry division at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, and the study’s first author.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 40 adults between the ages of 50 and 90 years who had mild memory complaints. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily for 18 months.   All 40 subjects received standardized cognitive assessments at the start of the study and at six-month intervals, and monitoring of curcumin levels in their blood at the start of the study and after 18 months. Thirty of the volunteers underwent positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to determine the levels of amyloid and tau in their brains at the start of the study and after 18 months.

The people who took curcumin experienced significant improvements in their memory and attention abilities, while the subjects who received placebo did not, Small said. In memory tests, the people taking curcumin improved by 28 percent over the 18 months. Those taking curcumin also had mild improvements in mood, and their brain PET scans showed significantly less amyloid and tau signals in the amygdala and hypothalamus than those who took placebos.

The amygdala and hypothalamus are regions of the brain that control several memory and emotional functions. Four people taking curcumin, and two taking placebos, experienced mild side effects such as abdominal pain and nausea.

Maybe. I’ve been taking vitamins and other supplements for almost 50 years and with the exception some opiate pills for pain prescribed by my dentist after oral surgery, I have not had a prescription for anything and I’ll be 71 in a few weeks. Of course symptoms caused by diet can be diagnosed and ameliorated with dietary changes. If you can’t or don’t want to try that yourself, go to a doctor and he’ll take care of you with lots of stuff you see advertised on TV.

This is one small study. There have been dozens of them. No study is perfect since humans are not inbred, except maybe in NJ or San Fran.

I’m glad it worked for you, but you are one case out of a population of a few billion. Anecdotal evidence is not science.

I can only speak for myself & the absolute pain reduction in my body.

I performed proper replication & verification testing.

It’s proven to reduce inflammation & it absolutely reduced it in my body.

Proven science in my body.

BTW, I’ve been running engineering experiments & performing high-level statistical analysis since 1982. ;-)

Yes, take turmeric with a little black pepper AND a little oil, such as coconut oil for superior absorption. Here’s a short video, on how to make Golden Milk, but I add raw honey after I take it off the burner and once it’s cooled down a little because heat over 130 degrees (I think) kills the active benefits. I use either almond milk or coconut milk and have used whole milk as well. I always brush my teeth immediately after because I’m afraid the turmeric will stain my teeth. (I usually do that with coffee and tea, too).

Does it matter what we were talking about as long as you can find some happiness?

Avoid the honey, and sugar in general for the best health.

Pushing 90?!!! Whoda thunk it? You’re pretty sharp for being 90 years young! Lots of wisdom and life experience there. Sorry to hear about the sickle cell, I had a young student who suffered with it and I know how devastating it can be. God bless you, MND.

I have this for your comments:
1000s of hours of research and writing led to some very interesting conclusions many cannot fathom:
1. It is hardwired in our brains to rationalize our own behavior to the point of rationalizing our own diseased state, be it life-changing or life-ending and will use that logic to any means, including self-medication to mask self abuse.
2. Those who find results from such self-medication - including reversal.of disease as-cited - and fail to identify the cause are doomed to repeat the symptoms or disease.
3. Minor symptoms are red flags which should be addressed, not masked with self-medication or ignored to the person’s own peril, artificially-induced premature aging and unneeded suffering in later years,
4. The rising incidence of adult symptoms and conditions - all precursors to common diseases - merits study, not medication. Developing countries have a quite different health status than western countries; this points to a self-inflicted cause of diseases -aka poisoning - which merits study. But there’s no profit in a healthy population.
5. A diseased population is a controlled population. It’s a Conservative imperative to avoid what they’re doing to us, not react to the stimulus like rats in an experiment.

Many of us are doing so in coordination with our physicians. My GI doctor is totally on board with the supplements I take to help manage my Crohn’s. I also take a prescription, but the supplements mean I don’t have to take as much of it.

You would do well to consult with a Naturopath. GIs don’t understand the gut.

Ask your GI next time if Celiac is curable and get back to me. Seriously. You’ll learn something valuable from this.

You may be surprised, but I agree with every single line there.

It’s why, when listening to talk radio, I always change the station when a commercial for relief factor comes on. :)

FWIW, I do the same thing when ads for identity theft prevention products come on.

I have an acquaintence that uses the VA for his medical ailments. He has a problem in one knee that needs to be fixed by surgery, but all they will do for him is give him these injections of some sort of lubricant every few months.

In my case and my wife’s. we’re all about lifestyle. e.g. we raise our own chickens for eggs, I eat venison shot on our property, and we also raise a cow or two for meat. We NEVER do fast food and very rarely eat at restaurants at all.

I’ve created a few hiking trails on our 32 acres of forest and fields for exercise (and it’s amazingly beautiful, to boot).

With all that said, there is something to be said for natural healing, especially as your body ages. Some things just get worse as you get old. My back feels better than it did in my 20’s, but it’s more fragile.

You’re on the right track. Read up on gut health (they’re finally accomplishing some real results this year) to compliment your choices.

Congrats on breaking the cycle (my new title will elaborate on that statement). Best of health to you both.

I noticed there are a couple of “gut health” videos on amazon prime as well. I’ll have to check them out too.

What “new title”?
