T. Boone Pickens, a Texas-Size Businessman, Calls It Quits
NYT ^ | 01/22/2018 | David Gelles

Late last year, T. Boone Pickens was back at it, drilling for oil. On his 65,000-acre ranch in the Texas Panhandle, an expanse full of wildflowers and rolling hills, Mr. Pickens, 89, had erected a $6 million rig and started pumping fracking fluid into the earth. Decades past his heyday as a self-made oil mogul and old-school corporate raider, his fortune and his public profile diminished, Mr. Pickens was still hoping to strike it rich, just as he had done some 60 years ago as a young wildcatter in Amarillo. The well has begun producing, but Mr. Pickens — who less than two years ago insisted, “I’m not going to retire” — isn’t sticking around to see the results. Not long after drilling commenced, he put the Mesa Vista Ranch up for sale. The asking price: a cool $250 million. Then on Jan. 12, Mr. Pickens did the unthinkable: He effectively announced his retirement, shuttering BP Capital, his hedge fund. Though Mr. Pickens, a famous fitness buff who once challenged President Barack Obama to an exercise competition, is still involved in his business affairs, his retirement ends a larger-than-life, only-in-America career. “Everything is big in Texas, and T. Boone is the personification of that,” said Amy Myers Jaffe, a senior fellow for energy and the environment at the Council on Foreign Relations. “He bets big. He has big ideas. And he puts big numbers behind it.” With an outsize personality and aggressive business tactics that landed him on the cover of Time magazine, Mr. Pickens became one of the few businessmen in the 1980s recognizable to wide segments of America. His influence is still widely felt. Mr. Pickens was an early advocate for shareholder rights and insisting that executives be compensated with stock.

He pushed his stupid plan because he wanted the money. But, he didn't pimp money to Obama, nor did his plan support Obama, from what I remember.

He would have supported mao if it would help him financially. Like most people.

Obama didn't get elected because of Pickens.

By the way, I do agree he came to hate Obama, but I am talking about his endorsement for Obama in the 08 election.

For men who have so much money, you would think they would have a bi more wisdom, but as it often happens, greed over shadows any wisdom in men as it obviously did with him. In the end he and America paid financially for his foolishness and greed.

He would have supported mao if it would help him financially.

That makes him a fool, and a scary fool.

People who would sacrifice the financial stability, freedom, and lives of millions around the world for their own gain are evil.

As I said, he can rot away with his greedily gained money.

He still has time to gain forgiveness, and I pray he does, but as far as I'm concerned, until I know he has, he can rot in hell.

T. Boone is a despicable crony capitalist, eager to kiss politicians’ asses to screw his competitors and the consumers. He would be a perfect “businessman” in a fascist regime.
He can go to hell with his buddy climate scammer manbearpig Al Gore.

Pickens knew how the game was played and he played it well.

“Pickens knew how the game was played and he played it well.”

So Al Gore too. It’s sad that you make such scums your heros using such low standards.

What's sad is that you are so hateful against people whose opinion may be different than yours.

People like you are why I avoid liberals. Always trying to start an argument when you don't agree with them.

So, bye.

T. Boone...is larger than life. Back in the 80s a comic strip called him T-Bone. I wish him well in retirement...

Look at that, you are conflating a simple disagreement to “starting a fight” (WTH???) to being hateful. Trust me, I have no hate here, don’t project.

Ha!!

Well....I'm not an OSU fan...but he has been a good $upporter of of OSU...........

I can't see the problem with that...you got a lot of money...Why not give some away...

My SIL went to OSU...and he's now a Orthopedic Surgeon. I'm sure many others like him...have benefited from T. Boone's gifts....in some way or another.

Pickens destroyed some of the most productive and high quality natural gas transmission lines in the nation, by reducing them to mediocrity and harvesting their prior value.

He didn’t add value. He raped it.

Dang! And I was full of myself for getting a $9 bonus for adding two customers to my small route when the price of the paper went up from 10 cents to 15 cents a copy! ($5 for 100% retention, $2 bonus for each new customer)

Since that was a small Texas town my guess is he went out in the country side and maybe surcharged an extra penny so they could get the paper regularly/daily
