A solar shield could save us from climate change. But its sudden collapse would doom the planet

Last year, the planet was plagued by powerful hurricanes, blistering fires, and temperatures that ranked as some of the hottest on record—ratcheting up concern that we’re already knee-deep in climate change. To stave off the heat, some scientists have proposed blanketing Earth in a sheet of sunlight-reflecting particles called aerosols. This solar shield could cool the planet and buy us time, but a new study suggests that if politicians turned off the hypothetical cloud, they could plunge the planet into a sudden ecological Armageddon.

The idea of injecting aerosols into the atmosphere first came to prominence in 2006, when Nobel Prize–winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen argued that scientists should actively explore the possibility. He said it would be similar to what happens naturally following some volcanic eruptions. For example, the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines cooled the planet by 0.5°C, after spewing some 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. The gas created a sulfate aerosol cloud that reflected sunlight back to space for 2 years.

But injecting aerosols would require constant maintenance—and continuous global support. If a severe drought, a new government, or an economic downturn triggered its sudden collapse, the planet would rapidly warm to the steamy temperatures we otherwise would have been facing. “The minute you stop it you get the full force of the total emissions you’ve put out and that are still in the atmosphere,” says Camille Parmesan, a climate change biologist at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom and the University of Texas in Austin who was not involved in the new study.

Many folks think that has already started so what they are proposing is ridiculous.

Government funded academia is destroying the sciences. You can’t advance a civilization with all this ad hoc poppycock.

You tread on dangerous soil here, only we K.O.O.K.s see the weather modifications going on in the sky, that some call Chemtrails.

I think you have to be a kook to NOT notice it. It's so blatant any more.

That’s the silliest thing I’ve heard since the guy who was afraid putting more Marines on Guam would tip it over.

I’ve spent a good deal of time offshore in a sailboat and the activity over the ocean just out of land view is FAR more than anything you’ll see on land.

I would guess that's being done because people are noticing the activity. Now they spray offshore and let it drift over the landmass.

Without a doubt. In the spring of 2016 I spent all day fishing and boating on the Pacific Ocean. I had known of the “vapor trails” that are laid down in a pattern, but never saw them in this manner. The skies went from brilliant blue, to hazy gray in a few hours. The most insane part was the near 90 degree angles that were made by the flights, and the border it described. Every bit of overcast was man caused. When I moved about 25 miles inland from the Ocean, I also began noticing the drift of these long “clouds” from offshore to onshore. Crosses where “drawn” at the seeming same altitude, that air traffic controllers surely wouldn’t have passenger planes following. Like you said, you need to be purposely blind not to see it.

Remember when people were afraid that nuclear winter would destroy the planet. I propose that we cool the planet by nuking terrorist supporting countries at the proper scientifically determined interval. This solves several problems at once.

1. Solves global warming.
2. Eliminates muslim terrorists.
3. Prevents over-population.
4. Insures peace in the Middle East.

You’re welcome.

“That’s the silliest thing I’ve heard since the guy who was afraid putting more Marines on Guam would tip it over.”

Why? Natural dust has been known to change weather patterns.

What is so far fetched about using radar to predict weather patterns and injecting specially designed super-reflective dust into just the right place?

If we didn’t try it, I would be very disappointed in our military.

I'm still pretty pissed off when they didn't go with the plan to stop global cooling back in the 70’s. Someone came up with a plan to cover the polar ice cap with coal dust and oil so as to absorb the Sun's heat rather than reflecting off of the white snow/ice. (Seriously!)

I'm just kidding about how disappointed I was that they didn't do it.

Maybe they should rerelease that Movie about the Weather Machines that go crazy that came out last year.

Bombed big time.
