American Curlers Have Heard Your Jokes About the Sport. Their Response: Try It.
San Jose Mercury News ^ | January 20, 2018 | Kelyn Soong

Don’t bother telling Joe Rockenbach your curling jokes. He’s heard them all.

As president of his local curling club, Rockenbach has listened to people tell him that curling is not a real sport. Or about how curlers must be skilled house cleaners because their sport involves sweeping.

Those comments used to irk Rockenbach, a 37-year-old Philadelphia native, but he’s seen the game humble enough people that now the slights slide right off.

“Almost anybody who comes into it with the attitude of, ‘This is nothing, I got this,’ when they get off the ice, [they say], ‘this was way different than what I expected,’ ” Rockenbach said, “and they’ll gain a lot more respect for the game.”

I used to bandy that quote about back when I road-raced motorcycles.

I’m not sure I 100% agree with it, but it worked for me at the time.

I participated in curling in high school. I really enjoyed the sport.

Unfortunately, I moved to that shithole, California, before it became a shithole, and the best I could find was ice hockey.

Married a woman from that shithole who told me “we don’t want to play ice hockey!”

Now, I am living in New Hampshire, with curling nearby, but I am pushing 71 and my knees and shoulders...thanks to 32 years in the Army, won’t allow me to participate...or I sure as hell would.

It is a great sport!

I shoot group benchrest. I laugh whenever I hear someone say they “shoot 1/4 once groups all day” with their deer rifles. To win you have to average at least .18 inch center to center for 25 shots...try it sometime.

I think Twister should be a women’s sport in the Olympics. They could play it in the sand... and use the volleyball girls...

I think curling would be way cooler if you were allowed to tackle the guy doing the sweeping.

BUTT, it is a sport that requires some serious strategy and is quite popular in places up here in the northland.

It’s a really cool sport. Last team scored on gets shot rock is one of the finest rules in all of sports, it completely alters the strategy of the game. Not to mention the sheer mechanics of sliding a heavy rock that far with any accuracy at all. And it’s one of the few sports at the Olympics where the women participants are actual women not teenage girl that have had their puberty delayed. All around great sport, highlight of the winter games.

If that’s your definition then NOTHING is a sport. I grew up in a hard drinking part of the country, absolutely EVERYTHING had folks setting their drink down to take their turn. I know people that can drink while playing football or basketball.

Curling is a lot harder than darts.

True.

Jeopardy is a lot harder than Wheel of Fortune.

All four. Not sports.

Sorry but no. Curling is a sport and anybody that thinks otherwise is a jackass who needs to push others down to feel bigger about themselves.

Curling is awesome! I grew up in Detroit and we watched it a lot on Canadian TV.

Every four years, I watch Curling. It is mesmerizing, at least to me. I have been watching Olympic curling for a while, and I still don’t understand the rules. But, I watch it anyway. Very soothing.

Apparently since it’s the only thing the “that’s not a sport” crowd truly excels at.
