A NASA astronaut who was slated to become the first African American to serve as a member of the crew aboard the International Space Station has been removed from her upcoming mission.
Jeanette Epps, who had been scheduled to launch to the space station in June of this year for a five-month expedition, has been replaced on the flight by another NASA astronaut, Serena Auñón-Chancellor, who was serving as Epps' backup.
NASA announced the crew change on Jan. 18, stating that Epps will assume duties in the Astronaut Office at Johnson Space Center in Houston, and "be considered for assignment to future missions."
The reason for Epps' removal was not given. Brandi Dean, a NASA spokesperson, said that a number of factors were considered. More From Space.com
Jeanette Epps
"These decisions are personnel matters for which NASA doesn't provide information," Dean told collectSPACE.com.
Six African-American astronauts Robert Curbeam, Alvin Drew, Joan Higginbotham, Leland Melvin, Robert Satcher and Stephanie Wilson previously visited the station on space shuttle missions to assemble and supply the orbiting laboratory, but Epps would have been the first to serve on the space station's resident crew.

That’s my idea, posted yesterday. . .great minds think alike. . .
“NASA scrubs astronauts at times. Astronauts are in and out of flight status based on their fitness to perform mission requirements.”
Yes, true, BUT given the diversity points involved, and NASA is now a political organization pushing leftist causes, she would be the last one to be scrubbed. . .she is pregnant, that is my guess.
CNN is reporting that Trump called NASA and said no more kneegers are going into space.
She is 47 years old. A bit old to be pregnant but who knows.
Sorry, but yours is the typical race card playing well-conditioned liberal reaction.
I take no joy in the fact she was bumpted, but will not, like so many others soon will claim it must be racism, and anyone does not support that claim must be a racist.
Oh really? Who threw out the disclaimer "if someone claims (again) that I am some racist pig"
You're the one who brought race into the topic, nobody else............LOL!
Why don't you stop with your classic accusations and address my initial post to you?
Yea, I know what STRAC means too bro........but I don't brag about it.
Private freepmail sent 2 you.
Also, Strac has/had TWO definitions!
#2 was, S**t, The Russians Are Coming!

What if... a tooth is abscessed and a titanium implant was needed. Titanium implants take about 9 months (best case). That’s just outside of the mission deployment date.
My point is - it could be anything: EENT issues, systemic nonspecific inflammation - to perhaps the onset of adult asthma, or diabetes. Very few people outside of the agency are privy to any information whatsoever.
Sadly there is a lot of knee jerk commentary out there on many sites. I find it odd and rather disturbing to see this person dragged through the gauntlet of asinine assumption, when it is not warranted.
