In his relentless efforts to demonize the press, Trump capitalized on a media landscape degraded by partisanship and media outlets emphasizing spin at the expense of substance.
Donald Trumps first year in office is drawing to a close, but his war on the media is not. Its tempting to think weve been here before. Every president has considered himself the victim of skewed reporting and baseless slanders, and more than a few distrusted, denounced, and despised the press corps. In fact, most other presidentsincluding Barack Obama for his liberal Espionage Act prosecutions, and George W. Bush for his White Houses rigid message controlhave been described at some point as the worst ever in their treatment of reporters. But none of Trumps predecessors ever made flaying journalists a full-time public pursuit. None had Trumps preternatural shamelessnesshis disregard for the norms of civility or the satisfactions of respectabilitythat has allowed him to behave as president in hitherto unthinkable ways.
But its not just Trumps character that has led millions to cheer on his blasts and has allowed scurrilous charges of fake news to resonate. The presidents sallies at the press find supportat least with the large minority of Americans who applaud themonly because long-term developments over the last half-century have destabilized the practices and institutions of journalism as we once knew it. Those developments, as much as Trumps personality, bear attending to.
Trumps psychological profile is, no doubt, the key ingredient in his hostile relations with the media. He rose improbably to the pinnacle of power by trusting his belligerent and ultra-competitive instincts.

They can't admit they lie about everything all the time.
Is the MSM on suicide watch yet ?
All Lies ...All the Time.
GO TRUMP!
Correction: It is the media feasting on everyone else. They offer nothing of substance. A parasite needs its host then destroys it. That’s the media; they need him, but Trump does not need the media.
What do flies eat?
Maybe if the media weren’t full of chit, this could have all been avoided.
“aspirationally objective media”.
No longer applies to journalism.
This kind of false reporting never happened under Obama!!!
Rush just re-explained his term Drive By Media... like drive by shooters, they drive by, throw bombs, create as much discord as possible and then drive away, on to the next quarry, blithely ignorant to the carnage they’ve left behind.
To the leftist fake stream media, simply telling the truth and pointing out their continuous lies and bias is a “war on the media”.
They can’t stand it that there are multiple information sources that are outside of their control, that their own importance and control is rapidly waning, and that for the first time in living memory we have a President who isn’t frightened of them, fights back, and has bypassed them by posting directly to social media.
I guess if you are on the left this is how you see the relationship between the media and the President. Media good, Trump evil.
I bet he misses the days when the NY Times decided what was “news’ and what wasn’t.
Grade “A” BS
The media MADE BILLIONS off of Trump’s campaign. People tuned in, bought copy, click for advertisers whenever there was something about Trump and it is still happening.
As HST would say: when they stop telling lies about me, I’ll stop telling the truth about them.
They have earned every last bit of scorn from President Trump and the rest of us. It’s suffering of their own making.
It's like a 120-pound punk slapping the 250-pound starting tackle in gym class. The tackle takes it for a while, which emboldens the punk, and he steps up the attacks until finally the tackle decks him. Then the punk stands up and whines about how he was bullied.
Hitherto the msm is a flooding river of caca dooty.
The media’s psychological profile is like a Manson read out they are out of touch with reality and the call the voters crazy.Bar room gossip is their Mecca.
Excellent analogy.
Those developments, as much as Trumps personality, bear attending to.

No politician before him has had the kind of experience dealing with the PUBLIC and POLS. (BY NOT bowing down to their every whim — Bush I wrongly thought all the BS written about him would never be believed by the American Public....)
Truman came close but in his day much of what was ‘news’ was basically ‘local’ and the public - in general - wasn’t informed everytime one didn’t wash ones’ hands when leaving the loo.
Trump ‘learned’ political strategies by having to play up to the ‘people in power’ at times and his opponents - on both sides of the aisle - are quick to bring up a picture of him schmoozing with Pols of the OTHER party...
Of course, they neglect to point out that when an R sat in Gracie Mansion he got as much recognition from DT as a D Borough President - where DT happened to be working or attempting to work.
Kind of like ‘Boeing’ giving 4 mill to the Ds and 3.5 mill to the Rs.
When ‘Boeing’ gets a contract the ‘losing side’ quickly points out how much the WINNER gave to the WINNER but somehow forgets to mention almost the same amount was given to the loser.
Guess in ‘real life’ one could call it a bribe - at least buying ones favor BUT it has just become the cost of business.
An acknowledged ONE TERM winning pol can finish off his ‘suicide’ by saying ‘”Yes, I took the money but it was a campaign contribution and I don’t feel it is right to GIVE him the contract”.
Pull that crap and the local 7/11 won’t comp a cup of coffee to you...
After Watergate, the press assumed it had a power greater than the President. Since that time, that have become drunk on that power, seeing politicians from both parties grovel before them. Trump is a wake-up call for the fourth estate and they are not taking it well.
The media brutally attacked Trump even before he came down the elevator. Now he is kicking their azzes and highlighting their lies and incompetence. At last someone is fighting back.
