ANCHORAGE, Alaska Winter is off to a late start in parts of the nations largest and usually coldest state.
Months of higher-than-normal temperatures in parts of rural Alaska have opened dangerous gaps in frozen rivers that residents use to travel from village to village and to hunting grounds, since there are no roads.
One troublesome ice highway is the half-mile-wide Kuskokwim River, where a man died New Years Eve after he and five family members traveling on a snowmobile and sled fell into a gaping hole. The others survived.

A lot of the cold air headed South for part of the Winter - even made it to Florida with the rest of the snowbirds....

Now I have to listen to the Kilchers go on about global warming and the impacts on their homestead lifestyle. They had a mild winter 2 years ago and that’s all they talked about the whole season.
Not do much this season as they had a ton of snow.

Pretty simple. When a massive high builds over Alaska, it warms the state...and it dumps all their cold air south into the continental US. That’s why it was 21F at my house in Houston with sleet and ice.

When summer hits there, using their illogic, will they all die? What BS.

They don't have Wal-Marts in Alaska? People have to hunt to survive? We have Walmarts. Costco too. In the cities.
A short two day boat ride or a couple of hours in an airplane for me to get to the nearest one. OTOH, I don't even need a vehicle to go hunting or fishing.

The bottom of Alaska is a huge rain forest; it isnt all tundra and polar bears. Shhhh. Don't let that get out. I live in the Tongass.

OK - it is frigid, and even the polar bears demand welfare.
(Did that help?)

I saw about a hundred robins a half hour ago, and they should be in Mexico. Think they’re on their way to Alaska? I’m in SE Pennsy.

The truck drivers on the “Ice Road Truckers” show always get hyper driving across ice roads. You never know.

"...ice roads..."
Saw one episode where they said that waves can occur beneath the ice based upon the type of usage happening on top.
From what I recall, the ice may appear durable and sound...yet structurally cannot bear as much weight as one would think.
Pretty interesting stuff, for sure.
