Pfizer Inc. said Saturday it will stop trying to discover new drugs for Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, abandoning costly but futile efforts to find effective treatments for the disorders. The cutback will result in layoffs of 300 employees in Cambridge and Andover in Massachusetts and in Groton, Conn., over several months, according to a company statement. The restructuring won't affect later-stage drug development for pain treatments Lyrica and tanezumab, or research into drugs for rare neurological diseases, Pfizer said. The company plans to use the savings to fund drug R&D in other areas. "This was an exercise to reallocate [spending] across our portfolio, to focus on those areas where our pipeline, and our scientific expertise, is strongest," it said. Pfizer also said it plans to establish a corporate venture fund to invest in promising neuroscience projects outside the company. Like several peers, Pfizer has invested heavily in developing treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's because of the huge need, but met disappointment when once-promising compounds failed to work during testing. Notably, in 2012, Pfizer and partner Johnson & Johnson halted development of an Alzheimer's drug called bapineuzumab after it failed to slow memory loss in test subjects. Other companies, such as AstraZeneca PLC, Biogen Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co., keep pursuing Alzheimer's treatment, but analysts consider the projects very risky.

What if there is a cheaper, naturopathic way of ........?
There was a recent story about how a cure was found accidentally. This may be their way of acknowledging that there is no point continuing since a cure is already on the way.
Well, at least the people they kicked out of their homes can smile if they can remember who Pfizer is in their old age.
Assuming he's correct it kinda makes sense that Pfizer threw in the towel.
My thoughts as well.
The human brain is the mystery organ.
Well, that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to understand it. It’s not a very good analogy really.
One of several sites on the Internet discussing herbal treatment.
The point I had in mind (but failed to make clear) is that Pfizer's in business to make money. If they decided that the chances of success didn't justify the expenses involved then it probably made sense for them to pull out.
I wasn't suggesting that such things shouldn't be investigated by *anybody*.
I feel you.
but...but...but...embryonic stem cell was suppose to cure ....everything !
Well of course they won’t pursue a cure-once someone is cured, there is no need for those side effect laden drugs to treat symptoms-so they will keep researching addictive painkillers and other “treatments” for symptoms that can be prescribed forever-$$$$$$...
There are a number of herbal/naturopathic remedies for pretty much everything-and also eating less processed stuff, carbs and refined sugar and natural, unprocessed food instead of frankenfood is a good way to prevent a lot of problems, and it is safer and cheaper than big pharma’s drugs, too...
On a related subject...if you haven’t seen the film “Awakenings” I’d encourage you to do so.It’s an outstanding film that tells the true story of the work that a Neurologist did with patients with an unusual, but horrible, form of brain disorder.
Of course-but this appears to be more about Pfizer’s profit margin than any desire they might have to find a cure for anything-the big money is in treating symptoms, not in cures.
Are those remedies you talked about truly remedies?
Or are they just purported to be remedies?
I live a natural lifestyle-the natural/herbal things I use definitely work for me, but I’ve lived this way all my life and I’m healthy and work out, etc-but one size does not fit all-what works for me might very well be detrimental to you.
Post #9 has a link to a very interesting site that I’ve gone to before-you might check it out...
there are very few things that the private sector cannot develop and supply for us
perhaps this is one of them? i, for one, would make an exception to my general approach about keeping government small.... if these 300 scientists are any good at all (and I presume they are, given Pfizer hired them), maybe they could be given govt contracts to continue their efforts to find cures for Alzheimers and Parkinsons?
take the $ out of the Snake Dept and ATF budgets?
There’s more profit in Government-mandated vaccines anyway.
