A blind Manhattan woman recently filed individual lawsuits against more than 30 businesses she says are not handicap accessible online.
Maria Mendizabal, who is legally blind, claims that the Web sites for companies such as Nike, 24 Hour Fitness, De Beers, Barneys, Donna Karan, and Kleinfeld Bridal arent compatible with screen-reading software that translates the written content into either audio or Braille.
Unless websites are designed to be read by screen-reading software, blind and visually-impaired persons are unable to fully access websites, and the information, Products, and services contained thereon, reads the suit against Barneys, which is filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
While Mendizabal has lodged some 34 lawsuits, another disabled Manhattan man, Victor Lopez, has filed 21 against companies such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Swarovski, and B&H Photo.

Yes. If you read his statements at the time, I clearly knows there are shortcomings because the act was written far too broadly, but assured people those holes would be narrowed.
They never were, or were made worse, especially in 2008.
Were she not blind she’d undoubtedly be the first female player in MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL....
Yep.
Agreed. Like so much leftist legislation that is constructed and advanced in such a way that opponents are Nazis who want the beneficiaries of the legislation euthanized, there isn’t much room to make a statement.
Sure, they both could have vetoed and been overridden, but as you correctly point out, BwanaNdege, there was pretty much nowhere to go.
Likely, they would both have been castigated in any case for giving ammunition to leftists to be used against the GOP.
Years ago,a vermont fire station was shamed into giving a woman an interview they had turned down..She was blind...
Some cut from another thread got posted by mistake.
Just the latest in a long string of ADA trolls. It's lousy legislation, and should be repealed.
Drive them right down the wheelchair ramps into the sandbox at the neighborhood park.
Yep. Few GOP presidents resist the urge to show their “heart” with horrific legislation.
The way Ivanka just got the tax code expanded to cover the nannys and private schools of her wealthy Manhattan friends is an example of another such well-intended, poor outcome, effort.

Not good for blood pressure.
I don’t disagree (though I am not sure where the “kill off the whites” quote came from!)
But you are correct. In summary, if they are afraid of being labeled racist or uncaring by passing a bill, they are unlikely to risk fixing said bill, which pretty much is what happened, IMO.
Well, Reagan being assured of an immigration crackdown for passing an amnesty (THIS WILL BE THE LAST ONE...WE PROMISE!) is yet another example of Charlie Brown (GOP) having the football pulled away by Lucy (The Leftists).
The GOP keeps falling for it, so that is on them.
At the bottom of it, they are politicians first, whose first priority is re-election.
It is why Trump’s approach is so...refreshing. Sure, he might run again in 2020, but one almost gets the impression he doesn’t really care about it one way or another yet.
He is a politician in a businessman’s sense, but not as much in the political sense, IMO.
Ivanka is looking for love and, reportedly, eventual election.
Trump is simply blind with love where she is concerned.
I work for an online retailer, and we are spending big bucks to get our sites in compliance with ADA and shield ourselves from this kind of nonsense.
Interesting that she chose websites owned by rich companies.
He certainly wouldn’t be the first father to feel that way about his offspring...
Oh, no! Yikes...Is FR accessible for the blind? Lawsuit city!!!!!!
Oh noes! Jim Rob better get right on it! (although, one could clearly see a leftist initiating a frivolous lawsuit...it is what they do.)
Because the 508 standard has been written. And honestly it’s not that tough for folks to make their websites compliant. Make sure everything can be tabbed to and it all has alt-text. All of which is just a good coding practice anyway even if you aren’t trying to be 508 compliant.
