Authenticity is quite marketable now, and for white pop stars that means shifting away from the hip-hop and R&B-influenced sounds that made them famous, and toward the sounds of Southern and country rock. For Timberlake, the pivot should be sonically natural: Originally hailing from Tennessee, Timberlake has never been shy about celebrating his Southern origins.

No, it's because they think it's cool. The same way today's "kids" think it's cool to be bisexual or transgender or gay.
I don’t care about timberlake. I don’t care if millions of teeny-boppers have tingles going down their legs over him. I don’t care if someone calls him White or if he plays music that is often attributed to Blacks. The article is stupid.
>>American Blacks can uniquely claim creation of Rap, but not all this other nonsense.
I’ve got a couple of theories of the origin:
1) country had a thing where the “singer” would talk out the words (quickly). Think “Smoke That Cigarette” and “I’ve Been Everywhere”. Eefon’ is like beat-boxin’ too.
2) and probably more accurate, boys being babysat by their older sisters doing jump rope rhymes on the street. It just sounds cooler to claim that it was their tribute to the pimp toasts at gatherings that they could only read about.

And...?
I have no idea who Justin Timberlake is and im Proud that I dont know.
Justin Timberlake is one of the great artists of our time. I’ve really had it with these race-baiting idiot columnists.
Close.
White kids act black because theyre afraid of getting beat up and robbed..................
You forgot to add ‘wearing a dirty cowboy hat, too big for his head’..................
Wills told the Opry that he would perform with drums or not at all, so the Opry allowed his band to go on with its drummer...
Thanks LYDIAONTARIO, I appreciate that.

No that was an absolutely stupid explanation. Rap was not created to glorify that stuff. Early rappers actually was either against that, or had no real message beyond just being party music. What was being described is derived from gangsta rap, a branch of it that developed in the early 90s that shoved all of the clean acts like Run DMC, The Fat Boys, Will Smith and MC Hammer right out the door. God knows what he thinks rap has to do with Europes issues. Thats reaching.
VanDeKoik,
First of all, I don't mind at all that posters don't agree with me - that's what the forum is all about (debate and conversation). But if you want to comment on something I said, you could have the common courtesy to cc me on a post about it.
Next, I made an analogy of Hip Hop "contributing" to "Black Culture" as the Bubonic Plague "contributed" to overpopulation in European towns and villages when it decimated them (that happened centuries ago for the historically challenged). How you read that to mean that I believe "rap" has something do with with current European issues is beyond me.
Both Hip Hop and the Plague have nothing to contribute to any society.
Does that clear things up?

I make no such distinction between "party" rap and "gangsta" rap because there isn't one - it is all crap.
Rap has a message: drugs, rape, misogyny, selfishness, crime, violence, stupidity, boorishness, narcissism - all mixed together with the inability to put actual musical notes together in any form. Hence, they have to steal even basic melodies from others, and then talk their profanity laced sewer mumblings over them.
Post #31 is half for you.
Exactly, and Bob Dylan did the same thing way before "rappers."

But Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash (who were great friends by the way) actually wrote amazing music, and their lyrics were not entire dung heaps of garbage (as is hip hop and rap).
Shame. I thought he was good in “Trouble With The Curve”.
What color did he use to be?
He’s gonna have to stop grabbing black girls’ nipples.
While I’ll admit that I misread that plague analogy, the rest of your post didn’t even address my original point and sounds more like someone that never even heard of the people I mentioned.
“ make no such distinction between “party” rap and “gangsta” rap because there isn’t one - it is all crap.”
Ok? That is just you being lazy. He’ll I can make the same inferences about country music and easily about rock (a bunch of degenerates talking about drinking drugs sex and money) but that doesn’t mean that those genres started out that way or are just a monolith of their worst adherants.
Fair enough. Good post.
