"We are very grateful to the NHL," Jake Nicholson told NHL.com. "They truly care about their fans."
Last year it was snowing, IIRC.
I attended one of the NHL Stadium Classic games in New York a few years ago. It was about 12 degrees out at faceoff time, and it got worse when it clouded over after the first period. The rest of the game was played in a series of snow squalls.
There have been a couple of games where it has snowed. They are a riot. I remember Pittsburgh v Chicago where it was blizzard like. That was a lot of fun to watch.
It looks absolutely freezing cold there today and the 20mph wind isn’t helping. Cheers to the people in the stands.
I attended one in 2010. While I’m not a fan of the one I attended, I do watch them on TV. Love the winter festival look of them.

2-0 Rangers end of first.
Buffalo is hanging in there. They has a really bad missed penalty call on Kane.
Awful non-call. Should have been at the least a 2 and 2.
Indeed
If I remember correctly, there’s an interesting combination of circumstances that requires the NHL to schedule this as a Buffalo home game even though it’s being played in New York City.
I was wondering about this and since it is in a neutral stadium maybe that is the reason? This is turning out to be a good game.
Maybe the original game on the schedule determines it if that is the case. I really don’t know.
According to the NHL channel, it’s only one circumstance. The Rangers are required by their MSG contract to have all their home games there.
Go Sabres....I guess. Want to see Eichel do well.
The other angle to this is that the home team loses a home arena date for a stadium game. The NHL gets all the ticket revenue, and they pay the home team a hefty fee to make up for the lost revenue based on the average home revenue for that team. Since the Rangers have ridiculously expensive tickets and corporate suites, their average revenue for a home game is the highest in the NHL. So the NHL would much rather pay the Sabres than the Rangers in this case.
That is interesting.
Beginning of the NHL season for me. That’s the problem with long seasons, I just can’t muster it for hockey until we get close to the halfway point.
They can be long and I will admit the I don’t into it until around this time as well
(let me know if you want on or off the ping list)
It was cold and snowy. But our seats were so far from the ice it wasn't good viewing. I actually thought the game sucked until I caught it on TV a couple of days later.
Then I realized it was a social event that had little to do with watching a hockey game.
There's another AHL Outdoor Game here in Hershey on January 20th. I will not be going.
Been there - done that - got the tee shirt!
