Without horror movies (where the audiences are comprised overwhelmingly of teenagers and young adults), this would have been a far more disastrous year at the box office. Based on what I calculated from the box office charts, horror movies grossed $490 million more in 2017 than 2016 (and increase of 53 million tickets) at the domestic office.
Considering the major increase in horror movie ticket sales, it's likely that movies that appeal to older, and more conservatives viewers likely did much worse in 2017 than 2016.
