While most of Ontario is under an extreme cold alert, the effects have resulted in some pretty incredible photo opportunities.
Especially at Niagara Falls, which currently looks like a frozen winter wonderland.
As of this morning [12/27], it felt like -19°C in Niagara, which has helped transform Niagara Falls into a frozen spectacle.

I see several towns postponed their annual *polar bear dips* today.

I believe Lake Superior froze completely over a few years ago.
Lake Michigan did......I have a friend in northern Michigan and that year they received over 200" of snow....I think it was the winter of 2013 - 14

I visited Niagara Falls around 2001 during a road trip from Boston to Chicago.
Got there late on a frozen night in February.
Everything was frozen, colored lights lighting up the ice.
Was very nice.

Back in the olden days mom would wash the laundry and hang it out in freezing weather. Soon it would be stiff as a board, and soon freeze dried. Yes, it still dried.

The Great Lakes dont normally freeze over completely and neither do the falls. For that to happen you would need sustained arctic conditions and generally temps go up and down enough to prevent that.
Total frozen surface area of all five great lakes is at 14.8% as of yesterday. That is up from 2.5% just 9 days ago. I think the entire region is supposed to be below normal temps for the next 20 days. I bet we go over 60% frozen surface area within the next two weeks.

Lake Superior is always the last of the lakes to freeze.
If it froze, the other four were already were frozen.

They just did it this year, and those new LED lights are much brighter than the old lights on the falls.

Right, although the years with most ice coverage of the Great Lakes have all been within the last 40 (2014, 1994, 1979) and especially the last 20 or so. Global cooling.

Apparently not, as Ontario has never frozen over in my lifetime.

Hunh... that's what I get for listening to the weather man. Quick research says last time Ontario completely froze over was in 1934. Superior froze over in 2014. Superior, even though it's the coldest, has more water in it than the other four lakes combined. That's why it freezes last with Ontario from what I just read. Ontario is fairly deep as well, but also has the Niagra River adding movement to the water. The more you know...
To: simon says what
Yes you are correct. I believe Lake Erie, the shallowest of the lakes is the first to completely freeze over.

Imagine the view if we didnt have global warming?
