Five rocky years since its arrival in tourist mecca Times Square, Guys American Kitchen & Bar from television rock star Guy Fieri will shutter. December 31 is the last day for the ill-received, yet still wildly popular restaurant that served as a touchstone for Fieri fans ...
There were both very high highs and very low lows for Guys throughout the years most famously when Fieri took home the top prize at the 2013 Food & Wine festival burger bash and most infamously when Times critic Pete Wells positively skewered the restaurant in an unprecedently scathing zero-star review...

Leave it to you. Thanks to farmed fish, people are actually able to eat fish which is “wild”ly expensive for most pocketbooks. But then you are the very embodiment of wrong on FR.
A bleached hedgehog with bacteria-ridden wristbands.
The average Yelp rating is three stars. That’s not good.
No bad review stimulates business except for a couple of aholes who visit to see if the food is as bad as Pete Wells says it is. If you doubt me, look at the stupid comments on the Times article.
What propelled it to a five year success (not too bad by NYC standards) was Guy Fieri’s popular tv shows. It appealed to tourists who love to hang around Times Square. Why, I don’t know. But as a second year culinary student, I am a fan of Guy.
Fieri collects classic American cars, including a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle, a 1968 Pontiac Firebird, a 1976 Jeep CJ-5, a 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS, and a 1967 Chevrolet C10 pickup.
Any Guy who has that many hot rods cant be all that bad.
He’s a fake what? Lots of restaurants serve fish farm fish. Lots of restaurants that get 5 stars from the NYT too. The reason why the times dislikes Fieri is that he isn’t a snob like the people that run 5 star restaurants that the times enjoys.
Good point.
It’s bar food ! If you were expecting else then you don’t know Guy.
The best pizza place in my town has a two star yelp rating. The best rated yelp pizza place has very expensive, very mediocre pizza. Probably a better gauge than the times but not much better.
I have no doubt that the food was mediocre; that’s what Times Square is. But Pete Wells went out of his way to kill that restaurant. You do know that The Times does not generally review tourist spots, don’t you? They hit either very high end or the diverse ethnic restaurants of Bk’lyn & Queens. They don’t review Olive Garden. That review was meant to kill off Guy Fieri’s restaurant because he’s vulgar in a way no Times critic can stomach. Today, they are comparing him to the President in his over-arching “vulgarity.” I reject that crap.
Exactly, all food we eat should be free range, organic! Including all grains, fruits and vegetables!
Confining plants & animals, recycling nutrients and fighting plant & animal diseases & pests is wrong.
Hunter/gatherer is the only way to go!

I remember the story. The food was cold and overpriced, and the service poor, according to the critic.
Fieri's backers told him to get his butt out to NYC, and he made the talk show rounds the day after the review, claiming start-up quirks.
His fans still supported him, though.
I'm not one of them, and I really started to detest him when another fraud, Robert Irvine, was doing a charity event for Fieri, some equipment problems cropped up, and Fieri declined to let Irvine's crew use a nearby Fieri restaurant to help alleviate the issue.
Is there an intrinsic reason I should care about some feud between Fieri & Robert Irvine??
Times Square is actually one of the LAST places tourists who really want to see and enjoy the rich variety of experiences in Manhattan ought to go. Nothing “food wise” in that area is worth what is charged; just ‘cause it’s in that neighborhood.
Irvine's there to do a favor for Fieri (in the form of public relations for Fieri's business interest via the charity event), and Fieri blows Irvine off when Irvine needed a quick hand.
I like Guy. The times probably looks at him like fly over country.
Guy should become a coke snorting heroin addict, eat animal gonads, and espouse Leftist talking points if he wants NY critics to sing his praises.
Guy praised several family owned restaurants (long running too) in my city. I don’t look up what he’s plugged but am happy for the families’ businesses he helped promote.
Guy Fieri is entertaining. A few days ago, I watch one of his DDD shows about New England restaurants. One was about a famous diner in Middletown, CT called ‘O’Rouke’s, great food.
Correct. The snoots hate Guy, Paula Deen, Robert Irvine, Barefoot Contessa, cuz none went to culinary school and they ALL are stars who are much more influential and important than the snoot reviewers are.
