Last 'alphabet series' novel published in August
Author Sue Grafton, known for her best-selling "alphabet series" of mystery novels, has died at age 77, according to a statement from her daughter.
Jamie Clark wrote on both the author's official Facebook page and on her website, that he mother died Thursday night in Santa Barbara, California, following a two-year battle with cancer.
Notable deaths of 2017 Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast. She had been fine up until just a few days ago, and then things moved quickly, the posting said.
Grafton published the first novel in the "alphabet series" in 1982 with "A is for Alibi." A novel for every letter continued through August's publication of "Y is for Yesterday."
Clark wrote that because her mother didn't want a ghostwriter to ever write in her name, the series would end with the letter Y.
There’s always fanfic.
Found this in her Wiki article:
Her experience as a screenwriter taught her the basics of structuring a story, writing dialogue, and creating action sequences. Grafton then felt ready to return to writing fiction. While going through a “bitter divorce and custody battle that lasted six long years,” Grafton imagined ways to kill or maim her ex-husband. Her fantasies were so vivid that she decided to write them down.
That’s a constructive way to deal with fantasies of killing your nemesis.
She was a fine writer, actually. She had a very good ear for dialogue and she was good on places and the people that went with them (fringe areas of LA, for example). Her plots were also good.
I enjoyed her books and Im sorry that there wont be any more of them. She done good.
Sorry to hear this.
You know an author I miss from the same genre? Lawrence Sanders, the had the Deadly Sin series. Or was it Commandments. Anyhow great descriptions of 60s 70s NYC and its peoples.
That was very clever! Zzzzzzzz...
Dang , wish I would have thought of that .
The first one, A is for Alibi, was phenomenal. Within about five or six books, this author became increasingly politically correct with anti-Christian, man-hating, heavy-handed feminism. Stopped reading the series somewhere around the letter I or J.
I read all her books. Sorry she didnt make it to Z. RIP
RIP.
They did “Zardoz” already.
“She makes Pies at 77?” Yes. But not for gay weddings.
Her books were very good, one of the best mystery series ever. Her characters seemed very real.
Sounds like she left surrounded by a loving family. Thats good.
