Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?
Dec. 27, 2017 | vanity

Posted on 12/28/2017 12:42:05 PM PST by bgill

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any other surprises? Thanks.

Go to bonanza.com and search for ms office professional 2013. I just bought a barnd new, permanant forver license with updates for....drumroll...$18. Really.

They email new key and link to download iso file. (Burn it to disc if you want—I did—so you have backup and can delete big download file later). Then use 7zip (free) to unzip iso and install.

I also bought visio 2013 for $20.

All work perfectly, 100% legal licenses.

No, it is cloud based I believe, although documents can be stored locally

I bought a new pc or two and they didn’t have office free.

Office was never free. I have a copy of Office 97 that I had to buy. That will not load in Windows 7 or 10.

MS does offer Office Online - Word, Excel, etc. free to use. It works well and allows sharing docs. I have used it. Just do a search for Office Online.

My old Word Perfect 8 still loads in Windows 10 and has always been my go to word processing program.

Windows 10 has been the most stable Windows I've ever used and it installed from 8.1 the first day it came out. I don't use the tile background but rather the desktop that looks just like Windows 7 did - shell I believe.

If for no other reason, I’ll avoid Windows 10 like the plague ever since it was covertly installed on my machine WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION. Such a slimy company.

It's possible you didn't understand that Windows 10 was going to install. Microsoft was very aggressive at pushing Windows 10 on Windows 7 users.

I deliberately installed the free Windows 10 upgrade on my Mom's Xmas 2007 computer on the last possible day in 2016. For the most part it was an excellent choice. The computer was bought maxed out with 4 GB of RAM in 2007, but the computer hardware won't recognize any more memory. Windows 10 comes with memory compression software by default. The upgrade actually improved the performance of her computer by compressing the contents of memory and making it perform as if it were Windows 7 with 8 GB of memory. This decreases virtual memory access to the hard disk.

In Mom's case it was cutting system access to the SSD that I used to replace the original system drive when Windows 7 got corrupted and no one could log into Mom's computer. I didn't have the patience to wait for her computer to reinstall Windows 7 onto a slow 2.5" laptop hard drive, so I gave her an early Xmas present in 2012 and got a new SSD to make the reinstallation go faster. That SSD has now been in operation for over 5 years with no problems. I think the faster reads and writes have prevented corruption of the Windows OS system drive as I never had to reinstall Windows again from scratch.

Thanks, everyone. I’ve downloaded Open Office and maybe have the printer recognized so we’ll see how it goes.

I understand.

I'm guessing the link the poster would really want is

https://products.office.com/en-us/office-online/documents-spreadsheets-presentations-office-online

However - it is cloud based - which I wouldn't trust with a 10-foot pole. My recommendation is they simply purchase a copy of Office 365 and install locally - no MS Account needed. I use it and can promise, my files ain't in the cloud - it's stored on a separate drive.

First things first, go to the library and check out a copy of Windows 10 for Dummies. I love the Dummy books because they write in words I can understand. You can buy it, but, if the library has it, why bother. It will show you how to get to search.

It’s a LOT easier than what folks have been telling you here.

Because you have Windows 10, you have to have a hotmail.com (or other microsoft email) account.

AS part of that service, you have access to Office Online.

Go to your hotmail account, click on the little matrix box in the top left hand corner and click on Word, Excel, or Powerpoint.

This does NOT give you the full blown Office, or, even the full blown version of these programs. BUT, it does let you do what you want to do, and you can save and print from there. And is is FREE. I do believe you will find it satisfactory.

As for Windows 10. I have been using computers since 1979. Started out with CP/M and have worked my way up through things to 10. It’s actually a very good DOS and is very easy to use. Just ignore the tiles and go straight to the desktop.

And you CAN do a search, but, first, you have to turn on Cortana. I ignore cortana, but, use the search feature there.

On the other hand, you could also use OneNote. OneNote lets you type up the list on your computer, and pull it into your smartphone.

You can still buy completely new systems with Win7. I was pricing them over Thanksgiving, but decided the hardware to run the OS was too dated for my needs. It is really the new CPUs and chipsets that are incompatible with Win7, but there are still plenty of new legacy chips and boards out there to build Win7 systems.

I just had a Win10 upgrade 2 weeks ago and it sucked. It deleted some personal photos of my family. Fortunately I have multiple backups of those files, but it should never touch personal folders and files. MS is run by idiots who don’t care about quality control.

Wunderlist is free and will sync with an app in Windows 10 as well. I use it for grocery and other lists.

I never bought a Windoze computer that had a free copy of Office on it. They were always willing to sell it to me.

Want free? Download LibreOffice or Adobe OpenOffice.

https://www.libreoffice.org/

https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Then donate the cost of a Windows suite to FR.

Oh, that’s my soap box. The nearby library decided after years of mumble mumble decades of volunteering for them and making nice donations, they don’t want my patronage because I live across the county line. Never mind my property line is smack dab on the county line. Never mind the county line goes through the middle of the town and the library is a quarter mile from it. Never mind that that county’s folks can still use our county’s library if it’s closer for them. That new rule cuts it’s patrons waaaaay down.

May have to drive 40 miles to the other one. Thanks for the idea.

I do not know when Office 2018 may come out but here is Office Professional Plus 2016
Get the cd as the download cannot be saved. You would need to download again if you reinstall Windows so you would need to save the purchase information. It is cheaper now if you get it on a USB drive. Just USB $19.95
https://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/home.aspx

It will ask you for your company email address to verify.
