Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?
Dec. 27, 2017 | vanity

Posted on 12/28/2017 12:42:05 PM PST by bgill

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any other surprises? Thanks.

Good luck on that. W7 went end of life over a year ago.

Microsoft operating systems do not have an "end of life." They have "end of mainstream support" and "end of extended support." Windows life cycle link.

From https://www.darkreading.com/operations/preparing-security-for-windows-7-end-of-life-support dated Feb 21, 2017:

Windows 7 will continue to operate indefinitely, even past the 2020 date.

I'm personally running W7 Pro 64 bit and have no plans to update, ever. I'm not alone. Plenty of folks don't care for the intrusive Win 10.

Do a search on “OpenOffice”. It’s free, and for the most part, operates just like MSOffice.

Thanks for the info on Win 7 support. (I wonder when/if MS will catch a clue and ditch, or modify, Win 10.)

Not most of the time, Office has never been a part of Windows (any version) and either has been preinstalled with the cost added to the system or purchased separately. If you own a licensed copy, you may be able to install it under Windows 10, but I think it may need to be Office 2007 or later.

If you’re determined to go free, I would recommend tying Open Office which will save files in an office compatible format you can share with other users of office.

Preparing Security For Windows 7 End-Of-Life Support - Dark Reading
https://www.darkreading.com/operations/...for-windows-7-end-of-life.../1328203?
Feb 21, 2017 - Last month, Microsoft announced it will end support for Windows 7 in 2020, giving customers three years to upgrade their systems to Windows 10. In the short term, computers running Windows 7 will still work, and Microsoft will still share security updates for the operating system. The latter is good, ...

“I also can’t find a “search” on the start menu. Humph, no start menu.”

When I got my Win 10 system in 2016, the normal Control Panel wasn’t on the Start menu any more, although you could right click on the Start area (no button) and find it there. One of the recent upgrades removed that feature. (They want you to use their ridiculous Settings option.)

It still can be found doing a search or whatever the hell that thing is, but what a pain. Then it can be added to the Taskbar. But why can’t they just leave well wnough alone?

I don’t remember the last time a computer came pre-loaded with a full Office suite. Older ones came with Microsoft Works, but Office became a big money maker....

Agree with leaving things well enough alone.

"I also can't find a "search" on the start menu. Humph, no start menu. Can't find anything anymore."

It sounds like you and I are on the same page.

I can't believe I willingly replaced a perfectly usable Windows 7 system with this behemoth. I'm not exactly a computer novice, and I can't find or figure out how to do anything on this disaster. ANYTHING.

I know there are those who might smugly say, "Read the tutorials."

To which I would smugly reply, "my time is valuable, and I own an iPad, so why bother?"

If you to to Outlook.com there is an online version, but you need an Outlook account which is free.
To save an Office suite to your computer will cost about $70 per year, but what you’re really buying is the one terabyte of cloud storage that syncs with your computer.

I have a Windows 10 phone and a Surface. I can access anything from my Surface on my phone and vice versa. And not just Office files, everything.
