I had a similar experience. Two gates side by side. One was C7, the other was C7C. I was waved onto the plane by the airline personnel who looked at my boarding pass. I was over the Gulf of Mexico when the pilot came on the p.a. system and announced our arrival time in Tampa. Two other passengers were on the wrong flight too. The airline took full responsibility for the mishap.
BelleAl can you tell me if that last post if that couple are the same person?
There were three of us on the plane headed to the wrong destination. None of us knew each other. This was in 2004. My ticket wasnt scanned, just handed to the gate agent. I was supposed to go from Atlanta to Houston and they were hurrying us because flights were winding down for the night. This was about 10:30 pm. I ended up having to spend the night in Tampa on the airlines dime, then had to fly back to Atlanta the next morning to connect to Houston. It was on Continental Airlines.
The bad thing was I was headed to Houston in a rush to attend to a family member who had had a medical emergency.
I almost got on the wrong Bus once. Does that count?
Not *quite* sure of her cheekbones / forehead, though.
I got a really strange Email to me with the 'younger' picture a day before the aircraft turned around. That older picture is chrissy Teigen parents. After I got the Email I looked found his twitter Her father is a freaking nut.

If a famous couple were not on that flight, would we have ever heard about it?
Sum Ting Wong.
Standard practice in that event is, the airline gets to fly the unauthorized passenger back home on their dime (punishment for being stupid enough to let him fly).
In this case, someone made a bad decision, inconveniencing a planeload of passengers and wasting many gallons of jet fuel.
I hope the airline gets sued.
Could be. Why?
Maybe I should ask him?
