A limited series exploring the Watergate scandal is currently in the works at Netflix from Matt Charman, George Clooney, and Grant Heslov, Variety has learned from sources.
Charman, who co-wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg film Bridge of Spies with Joel and Ethan Coen, will serve as the writer on the eight-part limited series, which will delve into the stories of certain key figures in the infamous scandal. Clooney and Heslov will executive produce, with sources telling Variety that Clooney may also direct part of the series should Netflix pick it up. Sonar Entertainment will produce. Sonar inked a first look deal with Clooney and Heslovs Smokehouse Pictures last year.
The Watergate scandal began in June 1972 when five men were arrested for breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate complex in Washington D.C. The subsequent investigation revealed a cover up initiated by high-ranking White House officials that eventually forced the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.
Charman is repped by CAA and Michael McCoy in the UK, Jeffrey Silver, and attorneys Gretchen Rush and Dan Fox. Smokehouse is repped by CAA.
Charman recently reteamed with Spielberg and Bridge of Spies producer Marc Platt to develop a feature on legendary newscaster Walter Kronkite. Charman, who received an Academy Award nomination for his work on the Bridge of Spies screenplay, is also attached to produce the World War II action movie Liberty Road. In addition, he is executive producing MGMs Adolf Eichmann story Operation Finale, starring Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac.
This marks the second foray into television for Clooney and Smokehouse in recent months. In November, it was revealed that Clooney is attached to star in and direct a limited series adaptation of the novel Catch 22 from Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. Clooney will star in the role of Colonel Cathcart. The series is being eyed for an early 2018 shoot. The episodes of that series were co-written by Luke Davies and David Michôd, who will also executive produce. Richard Brown and Steve Golin will executive produce for Anonymous Content along with Clooney and Heslov under their Smokehouse Pictures banner.
I also remember they did a Hitler Made-For-TV movie, and explicitly tried to tie it to W.
LBJ, no so much...
yawn
I’d be willing to bet that less than 1% of Hillary voters have any idea she worked on the Watergate investigation. Even fewer have any idea that she was fired for being unethical.
I hope that part of the story gets played up on social media and talk radio when Clooney leaves it out of the film.
Rats have challenged, schrmed, coordinated every campaign since 1960
Is this another variation with them playing essentially the same two gay guys?
The guy who’s known as Deep Throat os the same guy who botched the Eilliam Ayers’ Pentagon bombing prosecution with questionable activities.
“You won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore.”
Sorry Dick, you’re dead and they’re still kicking you around.
Sorry liberals complain about the mote in others eyes but fail to notice the beam in theirs.
Watergate is zero, zip, nada. Not interested.
Obamagate will make Watergate a grain on the beach.
Obama’ agenda had many fronts, all watergates...Lois Lerner and the IRS, lets talk about Benghazi in detail.... shit... washerman... Rhodes...Uranium 1..... Brennan... Mills Obama had many departments all having their own Watergates demonstrating his administrations abuse of power.
Lets talk about his impact globally... Benghazi, Iraq, Iran and his most recent speech in India about promoting the world of islam.
and the downfall of Europe because the floodgates in Libya were opened..
The thing about Watergate is that it was Quaint, a quaint crime committed by quaint means for quaint purposes. ( If those purposes have ever been determined! )
The damning thing was that it was undeniably connected directly to the White House. So, that was it.
Grand and unassailable crimes were subsequently committed “under color of law,” that is, by simple and open abuse of Presidential powers. Nixon’s mistake was in trying to be sneaky.
And to make matters worse, Nixon did a lot to advance their causes.
Watergate does not bother me.
So that is what the extra dollar a month is for !
This is all the commies have to do? Watergate was a farce.
Yep, it’s their biggest political scalp and they’ve been milking it for years.
Maybe they can spend a few episodes on Hillary and her getting fired for trying to fake crap in court and her own lead attorney shuts her down.
Id like to see a series called The Blue Dress.
Or,perhaps How Pelosi and Schumer Illegally Knowingly Installed a foreigner as President of the USA.
