The thing about Watergate is that it was Quaint, a quaint crime committed by quaint means for quaint purposes. ( If those purposes have ever been determined! )
The damning thing was that it was undeniably connected directly to the White House. So, that was it.
Grand and unassailable crimes were subsequently committed “under color of law,” that is, by simple and open abuse of Presidential powers. Nixon’s mistake was in trying to be sneaky.
