The Lingguan Tower in China was completed destroyed by flames yesterday Fire started from a hall below the pagoda and quickly spread to the structure Two other buildings in Nine Dragons Monastery were also reduced to rubble No casualties was reported and authority is investigating the cause of the fire
A huge fire yesterday reduced a 16-storey Buddhist pagoda to rubble in China.
The Lingguan Tower, billed as 'Asia's tallest wooden pagoda', burnt to the ground after being engulfed in the flames for about four hours.
The fire reportedly started from a hall underneath the pagoda and quickly spread to the wooden structure.
The fire started at around 12:40pm at the Main Hall of the Nine Dragons Monastery, which is situated in Mianzhu city, Sichuan Province, reported People's Daily Online.
The Buddhist temple is known as the Jiulong Monastery in Chinese.
High winds quickly pushed the blaze towards the pagoda as well as the Hall of Arhan near the Main Hall, said the report.
The three buildings occupied an area of more than 800 square metres (8,611 square feet).

MUSLIMS!
The Buddhists would tell you that the physical world is an illusion. So the pagoda was an illusion as well. In that case, f*ck it, who cares?

LMAO! Yup, that’s it!
Could you imagine how creaky the floors must have been ?
It must have settled in many centuries ago.................
Come to think of it, and I’ve thought about this decades ago when I first learned about it, that whole building must have been a risk.
The heat from occupancy must have been interesting. Get a few dozen people in there walking around, and the wooden supports must have built up a lot of heat. And the nails ? It had to be screwed together and propped up over the decades.
I would think it would be settling forever, basically. And again the heat in the wood on the lower supports from the stresses should have been something to calculate.
This was in China.
Surprising that Mao wasn't in on the deal.
All I can say is that it's SO confusing with all of those Billions of people living over there so close to the local Civilizational Center of North Korea.
Don’t believe it was an accident. Fire can’t burn wood.
Thanks Red Badger. 16 storey wood building, that pushes the envelope a bit on self-supporting wood structures. There's an old Chinese pilgrim account of a wood pagoda in India that stood a staggering 800 feet high.
Asia: it’s inscrutable.
It was the heat of the moment.
You win the internet!
Inscrutable?
What are their current policies wrt importing Islamics?
“It spins, whistles, then at the end it pops up and has a small read lantern burning in the windows.”
That would have been something to see, if the real one did that too. I would have paid good money to see that.
Maybe the arsonist was a just a dumb **** who thought the same thing.
*Y Yu Hi Ding Yu Dum Chit?
You didn’t get the weak joke, but that’s to be expected when one doesn’t know Japan from China.
Should have just dumped all their sake on it.
that’s a shame... you would think they would retro-fit it with some major sprinkler systems
But,... 16 stories is about the limit for a wooden building.
That’s a whole ‘nother story.................
