The truth is all the lines represented in the image are curvy, but if youre like most people, you should see alternating rows of straight and wavy lines.
Though its somewhat unclear how it works, scientists think its caused by the brain using different mechanisms to identify curved and angular shapes. These mechanisms may interfere or compete with each other, producing this strange effect.

Then you have it!......................
“OMG, I have it. I have the defect. Can the government help me?”
So do I.
Hopefully our federal, state and local governments can triple our monthly SS payments, IRA payments and retirement payments make them tax free for the rest of our defective lives.
It works because there are no straight lines in nature. Therefore our brain “notices” the straight lines as a focal point and blurs the others.
ONLY IN THE GRAY BACKGROUND (noise)
It’s like the old joke where a guy is being shown ink blots and every one reminds him of girls. When told he’s obcessed with sex the man replies: “Don’t blame me for your dirty pictures!”
Interesting.
Many natural straight lines, but most are small; crystals?
‘It’ll knock your eyes out, kid.’
Im betting you have some background with art? I think the trick being displayed is pretty well understood by artists. Putting lighter colors on one side and darker on the opposite side indicates light source. If you zoom put and stare at the curvy lines and let your focus drift slightly like you do with 3d art you dont see waves up and down so much as an undulating forward (white, front light source) and away (further from light source).
The grant whores know that driving over to the tech school and asking an art instructor would put an end to their funding.
I have the defect big time and will apply for disability and food stamps this afternoon.
We do not have curvature blindness. Images such as this are not present in nature, and so there is absolutely no reason why the human vision system ever needed to be able to process them.
This is a completely unnatural, abnormal situation, purposely devised so as to exploit one aspect of the vision system, the one that cannot handle that image.
Mildly interesting, but nevertheless a useless exercise.
Oh, so they’re talking about the zig zag lines. Well, why the blazin’ heck didn’t they say so. I thought they were talking about either the zig zags or the curves are supposed to be straight. Geez. Need some explanation there.
A zig zag is a zig zag. Not a straight line.
A wavy line is a wavy line. Not a straight line.
A diagonal line is a straight line but only at the color change.
OK, I give up. Makes no sense. It’s a stupid game.
Intriguing optical illusion proves most humans have curvature blindness, which explains the “Flat Earth” theory.
there fixed it
Because the brain handles contrast in an integrative manner
The “zig zags” aren’t really “zig zags”. They are exactly the same as the “wavy lines”, you are just seeing them as “zig zags”.
Put a straight edge, like the edge of a piece of paper, against the “zig zag” on your screen and you can see it is curved just the same as the “wavy line”.
How so - give me your theory.

Yes.
So, where's the bleepin' straight lines?
Don’t worry, you’re covered by the ADA. Your check and handicap parking sticker will be arriving shortly.
