The median net worth for non-immigrant African-American households in the Greater Boston region is $8, according to “The Color of Wealth in Boston,” a 2015 report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Duke University, and the New School.

The critical time is every other Friday when the welfare checks arrive at the single parent households. Did these (Boston) Bean Counters choose to measure wealth immediately after? Or on a different day in the bi-weekly Riches & Rags cycle ?
In a small, mixed-race southern city, my sister-in-law sold Avon for years, to both white and black women.
She quickly learned that in order to successfully sell beauty products to local black women, she had to go visit every other Friday in the afternoons or evenings, depending on when the mail delivery was.
Even a day later would often be too late. (And don't screw up & go on the wrong Friday).
You originally said "wealth" is nothing more than money you didn't spend on bling... which is,strictly speaking incorrect.
Bling like an Escalade,a gold chain or a pair of Air Jordans would almost certainly have *some* real value.Granted cars,most types of jewelry and sneakers are *very* poor investments but they do have some value.
If a person's sole asset...the only thing of value he owns...is a house with a current market value of $100K and he owes the bank $50K on it then his net worth is a little less than $50K (you must subtract the agent's fee when selling a house).

When you add in (subtract) the student loan debt, your average white 28 yer old is poorer than most blacks that didnt go to college, and are on welfare.
