The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Still it remains about 20 degrees warmer in the room than outdoors. It got down to 9 degrees outside last night, so I did run the heater to keep it above freezing.
I brought in the lemon tree, aloe plant and some of the turmeric. Everything I left out seems to have survived without tips freezing.
Yesterday was another Pearl Harbor Day. Thoughts, prayers, and thanks to all our service members in past and current.

We are expecting snow this weekend.
Time to put the rake away and bring out the shovel. (sigh)
Also time for plenty of hot beverages and soups! I have unpacked my electric throw to cover the legs and feet. Even though the basement family room has carpet - that chill from the concrete seeps through.
Ooooo...an ELECTRIC Throw! Sounds like a plan.

Two thoughts on that:
Dad, who doesn’t remember much and is moving to Assisted Living at the end of the month and is a Navy Vet made SURE to tell me it was Pearl Harbor Day when I saw him on Thursday, this week. :)
Secondly, there was a guy giving away paper poppies for a donation when I bought gas that same day and we had the BEST conversation about us both being Veterans. I LOVE it when I can (mildly) shock these guys by telling them that I’m a Veteran, too. I love it! I LOVE hugs from Vets that went before me!

Other than that, all I have left to eat from the garden is KALE and Sweet Potatoes and some Butternut Squash - which I need to get to real quick to bake and freeze.
I have spinach and salad greens growing under lights, and I always have salad sprouts sprouting!
We’re supposed to get our first snow tonight - only an inch or so - and it’s been below normal COLD by us - high 20’s in the day and teens at night. But, we got our furnace fixed and a fresh filter in her and the fireplace has been cleaned, so we’re all good. ;)

Yep - Got it last year for my Birthday. It helps a lot.
My Dad was in the Coast Guard. His ship helped sink the last German Sub in WWII - off of Point Judith Light (New England area IIRC). I have a picture of him and his buddies gathered around some of the debri, which included a raft.
On the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, he would tell me about being in school, and the Superintendent speaking at an assembly telling the students that they were at war, and they would be called to service.
Thanks much for remembering Pearl Harbor, December 7th, 1941.
My 2 brothers and one sister served during WWII and they all came home in one piece even the brother who was a German POW.
I can’t believe it my self but I picked 32 more tomatoes this afternoon. They are not very tasty but they are fine in a salad. The weather here is frosty at night but lovely by day and is predicted to be that way for another week...

I always remember the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. It was only during his final years that Dad talked about the war. He spent most of it escorting ships, and rarely saw land.
I'm looking at a catalog “Totally Tomatoes...” Maybe order seeds for indoor planting in a few weeks.
My dad was born in 1906 and was a little too old to step forward in ‘42. Yet, with his commercial flying experience, he was accepted as a C-46 freighter pilot in the China-Burma-India Campaign that helped keep one million Japanese troops pinned in China while the American forces made their way up the islands in the Pacific toward Japan.
Dad always referred to the C-B-I Campaign as the “bump on the butt” of the Allied effort. He was a civilian pilot who wore the CBI patch but without officer's rank and was referred to as “captain.”
There were dozens of fliers in civvies during and after the war. “Air America” was one outfit in SE Asia. The Berlin Airlift also saw “out of uniform” American pilots who risked their lives...
We were expecting snow on Tuesday, but got it all day today. It’s a winter wonderland out there.Good thing I harvested the last of my lettuce a couple days ago. Salad anyone?
I talked with my uncle Thursday about Pearl Harbor and his WW II Navy service. I called him and wished him a happy Pearl Harbor Day. He was pleased I mentioned it. The whole family is really proud of his service.
That sure is a beautiful poppy!
We had an Amana humidifier built in to our geothermal furnace this week. I can’t believe how much better our inside air feels this morning.

Dad was only 4 years old when they bombed Pearl Harbor, but he swears he remembers that day, even as a little kid. He served in the Navy from ‘54 to ‘62. I was born in 1960.
Or a coal-fired one either! :-)
