If the tax reform proposal passed by the House of Representatives last week becomes law, 95% of current donors to nonprofit organizations, churches, and colleges will no longer be able to claim a tax deduction for their contribution. The bill passed by the House increases the standard deduction for individuals and families and will drastically reduce the number of tax filers who itemize.

Robert J. Woods is executive director of the United Way of York County.
Truly serious tax “reform” should include permanently preserving the deduction for charitable contributions and making it available to ALL taxpayers by removing it from the insidious “Standard Deduction”.
For most taxpayers there this is no tax incentive to give.
Why bother if the IRS is crediting you as though you had given $12,000.00?
Keep in mind: Many charities provide services which reduce the need for government spending. They can deliver aid with lower overhead than the public sector.
“Tax savings” at its best.
Real Christians will still give their tithes, gifts and offerings, no matter the tax structure.
They just will not give it to United Way. That is Mr. Woods problem with the tax plan.
Most (if not all) of my clients do not donate for the tax savings except for property. If they have property they are going to dispose they often consider the tax benefits of giving to charity like Goodwill. But rarely do I have clients say I have some excess cash I don’t want, can I get tax benefits by donating to charity?
A side benefit for churches and pastors will be more freedom at pulpit.
The United Gay.
I stopped donating to the United Way back when they were refusing to help the Boy Scouts because of their homosexual stand.
I no longer support the Scout, for the same reason.
United way one of the worst charities..I remember being forced to contribute so my employer could have bragging rights of having 100% participation. Truth is charity is charity....you should not expect taxpayers to refund part of you “GIFT”. I feel the same about church offerings!!!
I see youre rounding up the anti-tax-reform crew for this (oh noeee ... charities will suffer) latest meme & talking point in the jihad opposing the tax legislation.
You cannot cut taxes with out goring some favored ox. There is no panacea for doing this, so everyone better suck it up, or we will continue down the toilet of the entitlement society!
Funny thing about liberals: they want to change everything, but they don’t seem to like it when someone else changes something.....
United Way is an awful charity. About 15% ever gets to the needy.
I have never donated for the purpose of a tax break. EVER.
Who the HELL does the GOP think votes for them, the non itemizers?
Family's of 4 with houses are looking at increases in their taxable income in the $40-$90,000 range, that's about a $10-$25,000 tax increase or up to $2,000 extra a month to these CORRUPT LAZY PERVERTED THIEVES IN WASHINGTON DC.
One this is crystal clear.
THE GOP HAS NO DESIRE TO BE THE MAJORITY PARTY, THEY WANT TO PASS A CORPORATE TAX RATE REDUCTION, THEN IMPEACH TRUMP WHEN THEY LOSE THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE NEXT YEAR.
I will NEVER vote GOP again and actively work to destroy these degenerate MF's if Trump is STUPID enough to sign this monstrosity.
He's about to STAB HIS BASE IN THE BACK.
problem is many things are registered as “charities” while they really are just businesses getting tax free status. also mosques and all sorts of potential hate america organizations can betas deductible charities - so it’s not so easy as you wrote.
IOW, libtards can't spend as much crushing free speech and freedom of association, attack the 2nd amendment and equal protection clause, and push their abortion and homosexual agendas. Thanks lightman.
>>If giving to United Way decreases by 5%, organizations will have $334,000 fewer dollars to invest in programs that fund high quality child care, emergency assistance for fire victims, and services for youth with autism.
But that $334k becomes about $60k after all the United Way executives get paid and the massive UW overhead is met.
We all ready use the standard deduction and thus do not get to deduct our charitable contributions. We still give the same amounts to our church and favorite charities. Never thought of not supporting our causes because of taxes.
The purpose of taxation is to raise revenue, not to encourage good behavior.
Its about time these do-gooder charities had to earn their way.
