Jim Nabors, TV's the lovably naive Gomer Pyle, dies at 87

Jim Nabors, the singer and actor who became a TV icon in the 1960s playing the lovably naïve Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and the spinoff series “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” has died. He was 87.

Nabors, who underwent a liver transplant after contracting hepatitis B in 1994, died Thursday at his home in Hawaii, his website announced.

“Everybody knows he was a wonderful man. And that’s all we can say about him,” said Stan Cadwallader, who had been Nabors’ partner for 38 years before the couple married in 2013. “He’s going to be dearly missed.”

A tall and lanky Alabama native, Nabors was singing at a small nightclub in Santa Monica called the Horn in 1962 when Griffith caught his act, in which he’d sing in a booming baritone and then talk in a higher-pitched Southern hayseed accent.

That leaves Ron Howard and Betty Lynn left from the main cast.

Other surviving cast members (although none had a long tenure with the show): Elinor Donahue (Ellie Walker, Andy's love interest during the first season), Jack Burns (Deputy Warren Ferguson, Barney Fife's replacement, in the 1965 season), Maggie Mancuso, sometimes billed as Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling, who chased after Andy in a number of episodes), and Ken Berry (Farmer Sam Jones during the last season, before transitioning to the spinoff, "Mayberry RFD."),

Nabors sang "Back Home Again In Indiana" for eons at the Indianapolis 500, and did a wonderful job. I remember when he was outed and the 500 powers that be, afraid of what 400,000 drunken race fans would do when he showed up, did not invite him that year. Know what 400,000 drunken race fans did? They started chanting, "We want Gomer, we want Gomer ...."

Ok, I exaggerate slightly. Only 395,000 of the attendees are drunken. But the sober ones were chanting for Gomer as well.

Nabors was back the next year, and returned ever since as long as he was physically able to do it. The 500 loves its traditions. I think this year, I'd put up a video of Nabors singing the song on a big screen.

The shows were funny.

Nabors did a lot to support the troops in Vietnam.

Nabors is talking to God now, not you.

I just can’t seem to come to the place where I honor the life of a sodomite . . . who knows how many lives he has influenced to come to the dark side upon learning of his ‘secret’ life.

Got no use for him . . . alive or dead.

Pretty sure he was Christian.

He sang a lot of gospel songs.

Since he was from Alabama I assumed he was a Baptist.

He might have been initially, but it says that he converted to Catholicism in the '60s.

He wasn't a loudmouth about his politics, but he was a staunch republican.

Yeah...in some cases they just transplant a piece. And it regenerates.

As a teen, I have to disagree with you. Most of my friends don’t care about hay marriage. We my friends are more libertarian in terms of gay rights. I have a gay friend, big deal...

Thanks to progressive schools and television/media programming forcing it upon the masses as ‘normal’.

It IS a big deal.

It is NOT natural (homo’s cannot naturally reproduce) and there is usually not very much ‘gay’ about the homosexual lifestyle.
